Delivery delayed because of random emissions test

Ugh!! Got a call from my dealer saying that the X3 that I ordered won't be delivered on time because it was selected for a random emissions test. They don't even have more details beyond that. Any thoughts? Please chime in.

It happens. A couple people that had their cars on the same boat as my 335d had their car pulled for random testing. Shouldn't delay the delivery by more than a few days if that.

Hopefully the EPA testers won't put more than a few thousand miles on it.

I've heard they just jack up the back tires and run it it in reverse for a few hours to unwind the miles on the speedometer so you won't even know they put all the miles on it

I wouldn't want anyone to run any sort of tests that weren't req'd on other models, per say. How do you know what sort of things they are doing to the car?

I am fussy like that and just don't want anything that could possibly provide issues down the line.

Ask for a discount or a complete rebuild/reorder.

Many states require routine emissions tests (I guess not all?). If it's something along those lines, I wouldn't worry about it. Here in VA we have to get them yearly. I'd ask, though. If they took your engine apart, then I'd have an issue.

If you run an Internet search for "Production Line Testing of road vehicles” you will find information related to what is involved. Apparently, the EPA routinely picks production samples and tests them for exhaust components (CO, CO2 and HC), as well as fuel economy. Those probably require a short dyno run of a standard EPA fuel cycle, plus a 48-hour fuel evaporative leakage test.

There are downloadable EPA documents (I found a 3.9 MB PDF titled "EPA Confirmatory Testing, Random and Targeted") which discusses the process and the results in detail.

It sounds like they won’t put too many miles on the vehicle during the short dyno run, or otherwise stress it very much, so, other than the couple of days delay, there’s probably not anything to worry about. In some ways, it might actually be an advantage to have a car that passed the EPA test. It would indicate that the car was working within design specs., so would be sort of a final QA test.

According to one 2008 document, several percent of the random samples 'pulled" by the EPA do not pass the test. One listed manufacturer had 6 of 300 cars fail. Once pulled for testing, the manufacturer is not allowed to "tweek" the engine other than to adjust the idle speed.

Very interesting! But I also know that the EPA's facility is in *drum rolls* ANN ARBOR MICHIGAN! So that's quite a diversion from it's original path. Anyway I emailed my dealer asking them to address some of my concerns. We'll see what they say. Man... I always manage to get myself into these weird situations.

well at least if they drive it to Ann Arbor maybe you'll luck out and get a set of snow tires out of 'em since they just had a blizzard up there so will have to put on the snows - or at least a set of chains

How many miles on the odometer when you received it?
Wondering if the extra test added any significant amount.
Mine had 5 or 6 when received and that included a couple put on by the dealer during the pre-delivery check.

I'm guessing its about 1,400 miles round trip to Ann Arbor for the testing that those dock workers had to drive it - but hey at least now he has just 600 miles to go before the break-in period is over!! ;-)

It is amazing to read how much can a delivery be affected by outside factors. Until this time, I've always had a smooth delivery: for cars on the lot, I had to wait at most a couple of days; for ordered cars, I'd just receive a call after it's ready and would go pick it up. Now I realize I was extremely lucky...
