X3 28i Dinan vs X3 35i

Hey guys hoping for some advice.

I have two X3's on my radar. Both are BMW certified pre owned.

2014 28i 31,000 miles -Mint, dealer installed Dinan tune (I assume stage 1?)

2013 35i 33,000 miles - Mint.

I haven't driven either, and of course have no reference to how a 28i Dinan Drives. Neither are very local to me, both are at different dealers. Neither are close to each other...

Basically I'll be taking a nice long drive to see each one unless you guys think I should rule out the 28i.

Thoughts? And yes I do like some get up and go, but no I'm not looking for a speed demon. Key point... the 28i Dinan is almost $4500 cheaper

I guess it comes down to what option both cars have, like msport or xline
28i comes with halogen as standard option
35i comes with xenons as standard option.

Hmm, good point! Especially on the halogens. I need good lighting. I'll add this to the equation.

BMW replaced the timing chain guide in the N20 engine used in the 2014 X3 28i with an improved design beginning 1/2015. Unless the timing chain guide was replaced with the improved design in the 2014 X3 28i you are considering, you should investigate timing chain failures reported by owners. Another point to consider is whether the Dinan added boost in the X3 28i may put additional stress on the timing chain components during repeated hard acceleration. Will the warranty cover major engine damage due to possible timing chain failure for the entire period you plan to own this vehicle?

28i Dinan is good improvement but still no match or comparison to the amazing, proven, reliable N55 in the X3 35i

28i is 240hp/260tq (Crank not wheels) *Stock* (I Dyno'ed my previous X3 28i)
28i Dinan Stg1 (Crank) don't recall the number but its a joke 300/330 i think
35i is 300/300 (Crank)

(Wheels Numbers)
28i stock is 224whp/254wtq
28i Dinan at wheels a friend of mine dyne'ed at 255whp/273wtq
35i is anywhere from 280whp+ 280wtq+ at wheels (stock)

35i keeps better resale value as well

go for the 35i...you wont be sorry. For a $4500 price difference it likely has more options than the 28i.

The Dinan warranty does not cover the extended period of the CPO warranty. BMW may deny a warranty claim if a modification (including the Dinan tune) is deemed to have caused the problem. Another point to consider with regard to the Dinan tuned X3 28i.

Had the stage 1 kit installed on my 2013 X3 3.5 M Sport a week ago. Are there different settings for the boost that can be "dialed" in?

WHat are the differences in options?

We have the 35i and TBH it feels slower than i'd expect. Reason for that is that the X3 is a fucking pig, weighs as much as a barge. It's also epically thirsty about town.

^this. IF it's Xline, the added weight would push me towards the x35 and the power bump. Wife's X3 xline(N52) @ 240hp is more than enough to move the heavy truck around impressively so I'd assume the x28 would be good if NON-xline.....

My driving experience is different than yours. I find the X3 35i to be plenty responsive for my needs with the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, if desired. From a dead start, the transmission may default to second gear in comfort mode, which may slow acceleration. I believe sport mode will enable starts in first gear without a down shift.

My X3 35i has averaged almost 23 mpg since purchase in mixed driving. Fuel economy meets my expectations. I believe the X3 28i in spirited driving is not significantly more economical than the 35i.

I dunno it just feels slow. IF you use SPORt mode and floor it then yeah it goes hard but it just feel sluggish in normal driving.

If you routinely drive in comfort mode with gentle pressure on the accelerator, the transmission shift points may be set more for economy than performance. It may seem sluggish as a result.

You might try resetting the adaptive transmission to see if this improves performance.

Gas mileage might be better with the 28i if you drive normally.

N20 timing chain issues are far and few between considering this engine is used on so many BMW models. Of course internet posts tend to echo the issues alot more. I asked my dealership about this issue and they haven't come across this. The SA we normally work with is a straight shooter and doesn't BS about.

In contrast, one BMW technician has repaired a number of N20 engines with timing chain problems as reported on his blog at the link below.

https://bmwtechnician.com/2016/05/02...-timing-chain/

It is hard to say how common this problem may be without better data. Such failures may occur more frequently as more 2012 to 2014 X3 28i vehicles (with the N20 engine and the original timing chain guide design) reach higher mileages.
