havent done anything yet other than full vehicle scope. The valve cover gasket leak is now developing - showing signs of oil dampness around that seal - so its likely just starting. and I need brakes. I have no idea why the original factory brakes lasted a lot longer than dealer replacement under BMW service. thats another thread I guess

anyway, between both leaks, brakes, and some minor maintenance i'm looking at ~$3500. I can shop the repairs some, I know brakes can be done cheaper, but with this amount of work i am re-looking at the 2018 X3 as well as a few competitors.

not really sure what to do, I really like my 2011 X3 and it drives well. I bought it pretty loaded, trying to get something new similarly equipped without breaking the bank. tough decision If i get a new X3, the budget will get me in a 30i not an M40i.

big question here for other 2011/2012 35i owners, what other things are likely to break between 70k and 100k - Water pump was replaced at 57k. both oil leaks are here and need to be fixed, they are well documented on this thread alone. 2 shops (dealer and local indy) both said i do not need walnut blasting.

my big fear is spending $3500 getting everything back in order and then having something else break and cost me more.

Typical bmw plastic/rubber seals will eventually fail.

Charge pipe, i think the thermostat is good to swap when water pump gets done.

Looks like all three of your oil seals are leaking...

Any car over a certain age you run the risk that after you spend a bunch of money on repairs/maintenance the next day/week/month something else pops up that you need to spend more money on. It is just the risk you run having a vehicle out of warranty.

I would spend the $3500, keep driving the 2011, and then wait for a CPO 2018 in a few yrs.

need to double check when the water pump was replaced - pretty sure thermostat was done.

All three gaskets the parts alone are probably under $100. All three OEm... These are diyable if your comfortable doing it.

Depending on what kind of brake job you need.
Changing the pads and or rotors is simple if you have the tools and have done it before. This def will range for cost of parts alone.

I would do whichever makes sense for you in your situation. If I went G01 it would be the M40i variant. 😃

I am not a mechanic, don't have the correct tools to do this repair. and lets face it, if something doesn't get re-assembled correctly by someone who doesn't really know what they are doing, the repair cost will go up even more.

My BMW service advisor said the oil cooler gasket should be replaced even if it's only seeping a film of oil because the oil at that location is under very high pressure and if the gasket blows out you could lose lots of oil very quickly and do serious damage before you know it. Mine had been leaking a couple years but I finally had it fixed.

I drove the 2018 G01 M40i today. really seems to be the only answer It's a worthy replacement for a 35i where as the 30i just doesn't cut it. will make the finances work and order one next week. The oil leaks are the next owner's problem.
