'17 X4 (F26) hatch issue bc gear shifter???

My hatch stopped working it either does nothing or it opens about a 1/3 and then stops. Wont close at all. All the mechanicals work. The struts work, motors, etc. My tech was able to operate it up and down from the computer bypass. Apparently the gear shift assembly has to communicate with the trunk module to tell it that its safe to open. The light that shows what gear you're in on my shifter is malfunctioning. They believe the answer is a new shift lever assembly...New shift assembly part is 1200...seems crazy to get the trunk working, no? Anyone seen this? Ideas?

I've found a part and method to repair the LED board inside the shifter. Probably going to try that before committing to a new (or even salvage) one.
