Bought an '11 X3 and did some maintenance @ 34K miles

Hello all. About a month ago, we traded the wifey's 2006 hyundai elantra with 135k miles in for a 2011 X3 Xdrive28I w/ 34,500 on the odo. Last weekend I did the following at my indy:

- New Advanced auto part AGM 1,000CCA battery (oem one tested low on CCA)- will register at stealership next week.
- Spark plugs
- Front, rear and center diff fluid change with royal purple 75W90
- K&N air filter
- both sets of cabin air filters (did a diy on the ones in the engine compartment, and it sucked)
- new tires: General Gmax AS03's
- Transfluid flush w/ pentosin ATF1
- Brake fluid flush w/ ATE type SL
- Coolant flush w/ peak 50/50 anitfreeze

She's averaging a little over 25mpg now, and my wife loves the car. Once she get's preggo, I'm seriously thinking about trading in my '09 M3 or mom's '07 335I for another Naturally Aspirated '11 X3!

Like everything except the K&N filter. I used to put it on every cars (total of 9). But these days I read different forum and many said because of high air flow, it let 10X more dirt go through.

Beware of the 2011's. They have a flawed steering rack.

I've been using K&N in my BMWs for years, and I've have nothing but good things to say about it. Did you oil your filters before each re-use?

My '09 M3's steering rack seems to be crapping out first

Yes, I do oil before reuse. In fact, nobody on forum ever said they observe 'issue' on their cars. But people do complain the amount dust passing through.

Really? That's a shame. Here's to hoping you don't have any issues with the F25.

Thanks...although I have a maintenance agreement that I'm tempted to cancel if the cost of the service doesn't warrant the upcoming maintenance needed to keep it under warranty. I know the brakes are due at 60K but not sure what else is....

I am up to 76k miles with my '11 X3 xDrive28i which was a demo model purchased with 6k miles on it. When I was near 50k miles, I received quotes of $3700 for 6 yr/100k warranty and $1800 for maintenance extension to 6 yr/100k which would've covered me to Oct 2017.

At 60k, I had service done at independent shop which included oil change, air and cabin filter changes, brake fluid flush, coolant flush, and new spark plugs. Cost $778.

At 75k, oil change and leaking coolant expansion tank was replaced for total of $490. Rear brake pads changed for $295. Rotors were in good shape so did not need replacement. All work done at local independent shops.

Unless something catastrophic happens before October (knock on wood), I will be ahead by nearly $4000 by going a-la-carte instead of getting warranty/maintenance extensions.

Seems you're at $1500 of the 1800 maintenance money that could have been spent...

I think Im paying $2350 which is high I think unless their is high cost maintenance coming up. The front brakes are $600+ plus I think the rotors need to be replaced as there are stripped/crossthreaded bolt holes on each side in the front. Rears are in good shape so I'm guessing this service could be $1000+ or so... I have another month to decide to keep/cancel without any pro-rating...

I should clarify my numbers...

The coolant expansion tank at 75k miles was not a maintenance item but an out-of-warranty repair as I kept getting low coolant warnings within 2 weeks after topping it off. I'm assuming it would have been covered by the extended warranty if I had gotten it. The repair cost about $395 and the oil change was $95.

So at this point, I've used $1168 out of $1800 on maintenance and $395 out of $3700 on warrantable repairs, with 9 months left to go until the theoretical end of my maintenance/warranty period. The car computer is reporting 9000 miles until front brakes need servicing, which at my current driving pattern will likely happen before October. As such, I may wind up being "even" on maintenance items.

All in all, if you think you will need BOTH front and rear brakes done before your maintenance program expires, it may be worthwhile to keep it.

At 75K miles, if you're planning on keeping it long term, if you haven't done it already, you might want to do a full transmission fluid flush. Mine was already brown, and smelling slightly burn't at much lower miles.

Here are some services I've performed in the last 12 months on our X3, 2011 xdrive28i now at ~102,000 miles. Nearly everything is what I would consider expected maintenance. FWIW, we plan on selling ours to one of our younger family members in the next 18 months while upgrading to a 2015 X5. We make many long trips and I'm toying with the idea of replacing the water pump and other cooling items soon too.

-Front/Rear Differential Fluids 91,000
-Transfer Case Fluid 91,000
-Air & Cabin Filters 95,000
-Valve Cover Gasket (leak 4/10) 98,000
-Spark Plugs 98,000
-Front/Rear Rotors & Pads (Parts from ECS Tuning: Meyle Rotors, Pagid Pads)
-Alignment, Thrust Arms 102,000
-Oil Filter Housing Gasket (leak was 3/10) 102,000
-Oil Pan Gasket (leak was a 7/10) 102,000
-Transmission Fluid 102,000

Most people tend to skip changing the power steering fluid. If you don't want to unhook the hose and do the full drain you can do the turkey baster method. Do it a few times and you'll get like 90% of the old fluid out. Easier than doing an oil change.

Thanks..rears are good for 30K per i-drive lol...it's the fronts that are in need.
