So how does this work?
Replacement bumper? Below bumper? Spliced cables or prexisting wiring? Is this $700 for parts plus install? Anyone install themselves at home? This is almost as much as execuhitch - I'd prefer execuhitch I think but not driving to SC to get it installed. Ugh |

The unit on the accessories page does look straightforward, though. and manual. The one in Humbug's video looked much cooler, though, with the push button. |

The one in the video is the European version. The add on hitch for the US seems like the standard 2" receiver type. The good news though, is it seems like it clamps on under the bumper somehow so you won't actually see it when your not using it.

My point for providing the URL was to direct discussion to the existing hitch thread, which already has details on the new US-specific hitch at the end. No sense having parallel threads about the same thing.

Anyone know how this is installed? Is this a factory installed option or dealer? I don't really want some dude at that dealer chopping away at my brand new x3's bumper if at all possible ...

It is a dealer install option. But the notes do state it connects under the bumper so there is no need to cut a hole in your bumper.

Diagram of X3 OEM tow hitch
Hi,
Name here is John. Anxiously awaiting 2012 delivery--meanwhile, here is a scan of the Parts Dept listing for the OEM tow hitch. Looks like the "hidden" feature results in a bunch of linkages and stuff between the actual mount and the ball. Keep up the discussions--the info was priceless in specifying my vehicle. John |

further re tow hitch diagram
I should have mentioned there is no availability date given and no one seems to know what would be done about the wiring--that is, no one knows what BMW corporate will approve--service guys figure it will have to be one of the kits that isolates the X3 from the trailer loads--the kits get a 12V and ground feed, then tap the various lights just to sense the lights being used--that sense signal commands the isolator module to turn on the corresponding trailer light.
ok, out of wind John _____________________ |
