I don't believe this works with an iPhone despite what this thread says. If you go to http://www.bmw.com/bluetooth and select your car, location, carrier and phone, it will tell you what bluetooth functions work. For the the iPhone running IOS 7.1, here is an excerpt of what it shows - note email and other office functions do not work:
