Correction:

Only the 2011+ X3, All MY X5s, All MY X6s are built at the Spartanburg SC plant.

The plant started out making 3 series cars , Z cars and X5s

Later the plant added the X6 got rid of 3er/Z Production

Or should I say moved Z production to Europe

And only now added the 2011+ X3 / up to MY 2010 all X3s were built by a subcontractor in Europe Magna Steyer.

Hope this clears things up - so No BMW does not transport cars from US to Munichs Welt for US Citizens wanting to do Euro Delivery

Ok, Thanks.

So... for X5 and X6 ED customers... those cars would cross the Atlantic twice. So Spartenburg, SC makes X3, X5 and X6 models now.

No such thing as ED for X3, X5, or X6. Only Performance Center Delivery in SC.

I hope this will air in Finland as well.

If you can't get your car delivered in BMW Welt, just visit there some other time. You can still get the plant tour (for 8 euros or something like that), but you must book it advance via phone.

maybe - depends on if they resolve the dispute w/ FOX or not

http://www.deadline.com/2011/10/dire...riage-dispute/

none of these disputes ever last long but sometimes they go a few days, the good news is NGC is one of those networks that repeats everything

I don't understand this statement at all. Are you really naive enough to believe the "german engineering" dogma... I wouldn't doubt that it is possible for some regions / locations to have better quality control or engineering but without any quantitative evidence of this it seems baseless.

The quality of a product seems far more related to the quality policy of the company than its location of manufacturing...

Exactly. Impressed with the BMW plant, very professional. Totally blown away by the Ferrari plant. It could have been NASA engineers in a medical facility. Then they showed the Corvette plant... OMG. Dirty, bad lighting. Looked like what we used to think of as a car factory, staffed by a bunch of toothless hillbillies.

Thanks for that. Growing weary of the American built stigma. The ASSEMBLY plant does just that. Assemble the vehicle. If the sucker is a piece of junk, it's not because of the folks (mostly robots) that screwed it together.

I just had two cars delivered three months apart. The 1M from East Germany is as good as the two 1er we had if not better. The X3 quality standard is lower than my previous five BMWs. I am talking about the details, like the seals, how flush the trims and dash are fitted together, the stitching on the seat, the paint inside the boot lit and doors etc. The Munich 3er is still the best of the lot.

All the X5s that I had been in doesn't seem to have the problems of the X3, either my friends, or the numerous ones I test drove.

I think the location where it manufactured has got a lot to do with these difference in quality. However, the location is really secondary to whoever manages the QC of that plant, or that section of the plant.

And my point is...the seats aren't stitched in the plant, just bolted in. Robots do all the painting. And seals and trim fit just as well as the tolerances on the structure allow it to fit. I am a first time owner, but if you notice differences I still have to believe it's on BMW not the American plant.

The seats are likely a 3rd party product shipped to BMW...

Have you ever been involved in a manufacturing environment? Quality control is meticulously monitored with statistical analysis... This isn't some amateur job here.... Quality in Spartenburg is going to be BMW quality. The whole "German Built" "German Made" thing is baseless advertising / cult like dogma.

It is up to QC to reject the inferior quality items from the outside. Most of the parts of the car are purchased from outside of BMW, but we get the final product. I am not critical of the Spartanburg plant, as the X5 quality is as good as the BMWs I am used to. I love the X3, but also disappointed at the quality.

Not quite. It is up to Quality to reject non-conformant product. If BMW decided to purchase a seat that doesn't quite match your expectations it isn't QC's job to intersect... that's your job when shopping at the dealership.

Overall quality from product line to product line could signal a change in company policy, increased / decreased market competitiveness, program management, and several other factors... Location isn't likely to be one of them.
