My car display went to blank couple of weeks ago when i started it up in the morning (was parked in the garage, in minus 20 degrees)

since it going to be very expensive to go back to bmw as it is out of warranty, i am searching for cheaper alternative.

it is 2014 model x3(sold in 2013), i bought 6 months ago as second hand. it only has the basic display, my idrive control only have the 3 buttons (audio/menu/tel) on front and 2 buttons (back/option) on back. Vin: 5UXWX9C5XE0D15866

what i want to do is, to buy improved version or same unit from ebay and get it installed:

The questions i have:
1), how do i know those units are compatible to my car?
2), what i am trying to do, do you think good idea?
