The steering feel on the outgoing model was excellent--predictable, direct, with plenty of road feel; hopefully the new model is as good or better.

I agree, but I also had the pump replaced on my 2007. I do however hope the new version loses that frumpy ride, and I'm excited to test it regardless.

I'm sure that the steering on the new X3 is electric assisted, not hydraulic. I also expect the new 3 series will be the same as the X3.
According to posts on the new 5 series forum, some like it and some don't.

Thank you Claud. That is what I have pieced together as well. It is interesting.... and disheartening to note that most of the car mags are beating up on the 5 series steering bigtime...... and that the x3 is probably a duplicate setup. How can we know if BMW has addressed this in the x3? Also, the optional sports steering evaluations seemed so ambivalent. Any data/thoughts on this?

The new X3 comes with the same "numb" EPS as on F10:

The electronically assisted power steering isn't up to BMW's best steering. It increases weight at higher speeds, making it easy to keep the tall vehicle centered on the highway, though the weight feels artificial, and the steering doesn't give you much road surface information
