Hardware up grade X3 28i 2013 to 4G
Has anyone up graded a "2G to a 4G"? Just talked to BMW Assist who didn't know what it entails and said check with dealer. My 2013 28i runs great and afraid it will affect performance as well as be an additional cost as with most BMW up grades. Not sure what I would gain with this possible "hardware up grade" or is it a simple software up grade that can be done.

The combox (communication box) in 2013 was ATT 2G which ATT discontinued. It allows you to remotely unlock doors, turn the fan on, and see where your car is parked by GPS from your cell phone.
You can upgrade the COMBOX to a 4G unit at the dealership for around $1200 installed and activate the service ($400 a year). So total around $1600 to get the car's cellular hardware upgraded and it will be another $400 a year after that. Why would it affect performance? It's nothing but a piece of hardware that interfaces the car with ATT's cellular service. When ATT canceled 2G cellular service, 2013 BMW owners with active Connected Drive subscriptions were given a discount on the upgrade or a refund on their current subscription. 2014+ model year BMW's were given the upgraded 4G combox. Is it worth spending $1600 and $400 a year so you can unlock your car doors from your cell phone? No why the hell would you want to do that? It's stupid. Use that $1600 to go on a cruise or something. Last edited by Riick; 03-22-2018 at 10:08 AM.. |

I agree not worth it. Looking at tech from 2013 seems disappointing but that's a reality, 6.0 is so much better and obvious I can't up grade without buying 2018 car :

I hadn't really thought about this being the reason that mine can lock and unlock the doors remotely but has no idea what to do w/ the GPS function through the iphone app. The app keeps asking me to enable GPS in the car, when (per the car...) it clearly is.
