I have seen preLCI X1 and the F25 X3. I thought that the X3 had a classier looking interior. PreLCI X1 was a bit on the cheaper end.

Too small for us but I bet that thing will be a blast to drive with the N55 motor. Probably be quicker than the X3s.

Before buying the X3 I had the opportunity to test-drive a preLCI X1 and the X3, both with the auto transmission, albeight with some differences: X1 6 speed auto and the X3 new 8 speed auto. The engine was the 2.0 diesel (177hp X1, 184hp X3). Overall the X1 feels much more nimble and a litle quicker than the X3 (it was the RWD version) when pushed hard, but the X3 has a much more refined drive and confort - I would say that it's another league altogether. On the downside the car is smaller inside and looks a lot cheaper (materials, design). Don't know if they will change something in the interior for the new X1 model, but it only looks half as good as the X3 if you choose an X1 with lighter colors...all black looked cheap.

Doubt we'll see the N55 in the X1. The 28i N20 will likely top out the range.

Nope, it was listed in the press release, 300 hp X1 35i will be the top model for US.

Interesting, must have been introduced specifically for the US market- don't think its been built for any market (including Germany) previously.

Yup, also just for the US is an "sDrive" model which is RWD. Should be good for keeping weight down and getting the best fuel economy. Perfect for those that don't need awd.

I test drove the x1/n20/8spd auto before ordering my x3.

The x1 would have been my first choice had the car been for just me and my wife but the x3 was better suited for us as we have a couple of kids.

The x1 was more car like than the x3 in its driving dynamics which makes sense since it is just a 3 series wagon with lipstick. The x3 feels like it has 30% more room although the interior dimensions don't verify that.

Have a look at these videos to help you compare the two cars....

Not only is the N55 available for the X1 it is also rated at 306 HP compared to the F25's 300 HP. Interesting indeed...

Oh, well maybe you didn't have a 28i version then?

"The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the US market."

Too bad they wont make the 306 HP N55 X1 in RWD trim only. That would probably offer similar performance to a 135i with a bigger boot!

I believe the N55's power figures are actually 306 HP and 290 something torque on all BMWs. They just say 300 HP, 300 torque so it's easy to remember.

I believe pre-LCI the only sDrive models were the 18d and 20d.

I don't think that is very accurate. The N55 is rated at different HP/TQ ratings depending on the vehicle it is in, i think this mostly comes down to the tune (ecu) and the intake / exhaust layout and other minor architectural variables.

For example the N55 in a 640i is advertised @ 315 HP, 332 TQ. While in the 740i it is rated @ 315 HP and 330 TQ. Same motor, same displacment etc...

I don't think they 'just say 300/300' for customers memory retention purposes.

With all of that being said BMW has historically sandbagged their numbers. Case in point, the N54 twin turbo motor was also rated at 300/300 but folks that ran their cars on dynos typically saw close to 300/300 being put down to the wheels which translates to higher than 300/300 rating by BMW.

The LCI has really smoothend the awkward front end, this will be a sweet ride with the N20 motor, pics below of X3 vs the LCI X1. The X3 front lights are looking pretty bland next to it.
