iDrive hardware/software question.

Hello all, I have a 2012 X3 28i with iDrive Navigation. So technically can this be upgraded to the 2016 maps? Or does the 2016 model and maps have a faster processor and different software schematics. I brought my car in for an oil change and they gave me a 2015 328i X-Drive with iDrive and all I could think of was wow, scrolling through the various menus was lightning quick, my iDrive takes a few milliseconds to go from one screen to the next. So is this due to the 2015 iDrive having a newer faster processor or just the newer software?

The 2015 model had updated hardware.
