LCI update will need to be good

X3 facelift for 2014 will need to be more than new bumpers to stop loss of sales to Porsche. I like my X3 but might consider the Porsche unless BMW puts a bit more power in the X3 engines.

Quite nice! Though the rear of that Porsche is ugly as hell.

And I bet the price, at least in here, will be 50% more compared to BMW.

But in general it is good that competition gets tougher, this will keep BMW on its toes.

I think they have different target audiences really. The Audi Q5 (which the Macan is based on) lines up better to the X3, whereas the Land Rover Evoque probably better alings with the Macan from a price perspective, although the Macan will surely be more $$ as Porsche is notorious for exorbitant prices for options (see Porsche crests on the seats / wheels for reference).

My guess is a well optioned X5 will be in the same price range as similar Macan.

I always though that the Cayenne was ugly but for some reason I think the Macan looks great. But like others have said it will probably be in a completely different price range than the X3.

UK price estimates for the Porsche put it right in X3 territory. Press say 4 cylinder starting around £33000 with turbo starting at £48000.

The top of the line Macan Turbo with a dual clutch and a good option list would be a good deal more expensive than any X3. I'm interested though - if the 1700 kg figure is to be believed, the Macan Turbo would be 500-600 lbs lighter than an X3 35i but with about 100 more hp and 100 more lb-ft of torque. It would be one ridiculously fast sport utility. And I bet it would handle. When is it hitting the states?

I guess the X4M competes with the Macan Turbo. I'm not looking for the X4 form factor. What I - and I bet a lot of you - really want is an X3M with the engine from the M3/M4 and which shares light weight parts and tech.

I think you're right and I think it looks good although shape of the back does look a bit Panamera and that's a shocker. Problem with that low base price is that it could become more common than the Evoque. The sheer number of Evoques I see on the road puts me off them.

Will be interesting to see what happens

The Macan may indeed be a great piece of machinery but I cannot get past how ugly it is. That big fat ugly bulbous ass is hideous.

Alsdo, the Macan is clearly a station wagon, not an SUV.

I have always clearly put function before form and frequently disagree with my wife in this regard when it comes to many decisions that effect both of us. However, in the case of the Macan, the form is so bad, the function does not matter.

I agree, Porsche doesn't know how to design a rear end to save their lives. The Macan in the article had some camo panels around the lights though. I guess it would just like a Cayenne back there - ie. not attractive.

The new Macan is not even out yet and you already know it is going to take sales from the X3? In my opinion, the Macan is more of a expensive version of the X1 rather than a direct competitor to the X3.

Looked at the C+D article, the codename during development was was Porsche Cajun (derived from Cayenne Junior). I like that name better.

It's actually 70mm longer than the Q5 it's based on while sharing the same wheelbase. It would be slightly longer than an X3 as well. So they could be cross shopped and the Macan could conceivably steal some sales from the X3.

The Q5 is just a POS VW Tiguan, and the Macan is probably built on the same platform... ie all 3 are essentially the same crap VW product. Only thing is you get the Porsche engine in a VW... The RR Evoque is just a POS Ford...

I'll never give up my wifes genuine unique BMW X3 for something along any of those lines....

Q5 and Touareg share the same platform. Tiguan is the Q3.

Really, I thought the Q7 shared the Touareg/Cayenne platform. The Q5 is so small. Either way they are all still VWs....

Sorry should be Macan shares Q5 platform and Cayenne shares Touareg's. Q7 and Touareg share a lot of parts but the Q7 is quite a bit larger.

It does, but I'd certainly take more power and lighter weight. If the Macan Turbo is 500-600 lbs lighter and has 33% more power and torque than the X3, that is insane.

In the past month, the Q5 outsells X3 in the ratio of 2 to 1 (3268 vs 1580) in the U.S. I can see the rear bumper of an X3 from a mile away and that is not a complement. With a big chunk of black color rubber/plastic, it is pure ugly (aside from the gorgeous M Sport) and is not premium at all. This is my theory why the Q5, with body colored bumpers, side skirts sell better - no matter you choose the least expensive or most expensive line. Funny is that the new X5's rear bumper is still quite ugly (again aside from M sport), although it has a bit less black "plastic" parts.

I am sure the LCI bumper will be all color coordinated (just like the LCI of the last X3). BMW has to stop playing these games - intentionally making a new car's bumper look ugly and fixing it in the facelift.
