Martha Stewart Builds her own X3 (w/ Video of the Spartanburg Plant)

Press Release

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – Martha Stewart accepted BMW’s invitation to design her dream BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle using BMW’s “Dream It. Build It. Drive It.” program. Martha used the “Build Your Own” online tool on bmwusa.com to customize her own BMW X3.

Customization is a specialty for the new BMW X3, the vehicle has more than 70 million unique configurations. Martha Stewart designed her X3xDrive35i to have a Sparkling Bronze Metallic exterior, one of three special exterior colors that are only available for BMW X3 custom orders. Martha’s BMW X3 has a Sand Beige Nevada Leather interior and Fineline Wave Wood Interior Trim.

Recently, Martha and “The Martha Stewart Show” crew went to Spartanburg, South Carolina to watch the production of her BMW X3. Martha experienced firsthand where BMW makes all BMW X3, X5 and X6 vehicles for customers around the world and interviewed the people who make them. The last stop of the day was the BMW Performance Center where Martha tested out the Ultimate Driving Machine on BMW’s own track.

Viewers can watch Martha’s visit to BMW on Tuesday, December 14 at 10 am ET/9 c on “The Martha Stewart Show” on Hallmark Channel. During the show, Martha will get the keys to her very own BMW and viewers will be encouraged to keep watching the show to find out how to enter for a chance to win their own BMW X3.

I don't even know why they bother to break up these type of shows with the so called "commerical breaks." These type of shows are nothing but a one long infomercial overloaded with product placement.
Last time I was at a doctor's office waiting for an app I was forced to watch the Today Show & Good Morning America.
The other patients were so glued to the screen I didn't even bother asking them if they could turn it down as I was trying to do some reading.

These shows are so mindless.

If she lost 30-40 pounds and started smoking butts, I could possibly be interested in this super long commercial.

Coming from the world of electronic gadgets, I feel the strong difference between just-in-time manufacturing in the gadget world and the world of automobile manufacturing. I am all for the customizable experience, but it appears to me that BMW is not fully ready for it just yet. As a global brand with an Internet presence, it would make sense to offer a comparable purchasing experience everywhere, regardless of the plant's location. European delivery is in fact available to all customers worldwide. Yet, the customization of an X3 is very different depending on the country of order, and the Spartanburg delivery experience appears to be available only in the US.

This is consistent with a company revving up their flexibility. I hope that in a year everything will be made available to all, but in the meantime - I ordered an X3 nearly three weeks ago and have not been told the production date, delivery date or anything else on it: not even if the order has been accepted. The dealer has not even been trained on the new X3 yet, and they have no test drive unit on the lot. They do not even know if and when they will get it. Another example: I have asked about the specifics of the 4NE blow-by heater option but that information is apparently not available to the public yet.

The X3 will sell very well: it is a great car with exciting performance promises and (to me) excellent looks. I've bought one sight unseen, which is still incredible for me. But the customization experience needs to be upped to the flexibility and communication one gets when ordering from, say, Apple or Dell.

I'm going to look at the bright side here. Maybe the fact that Martha drives one will make the idea that we need one easier to sell to my wife!

"You and I" might not give a flying F about Martha Stewart or her show, but if the exposure sells BMW even only 1 more X3 or makes only 1 more person aware of the X3 and the customization process BMW has succeeded in its purpose. It reaches a part of the customer base who do not frequent enthusiast forums.

She made the mistake to pick bronze. Literally no one would choose that.
