Not sure if anyone else has seen this, but I figured I would post it given it's the only review out there.

It's not the greatest review, but it has some useful insights.

Reading these two reviews - one from the UK, the second from the US - prompts me to ask a question about the 20d/28d engine in the LCI X3. I had always assumed that the 28d engine as used in US/Can spec X3, and the 20d engine as used in other markets in the LCI X3 were the same engine. But are they?

From my reading elsewhere the 20d engine in the LCI X3 is the first application of a new family of BMW diesels where it has been give the BMW engine designation of B47, replacing the N47 engine that has ben around since 2007. As the UK article points out, this has boosted the power of the new engine by 8 bhp (or 5kW) and 20 Nm to 188 bhp/400Nm. However I notice the spec of the 28d engine as used in the US/Canadian X3s is only rated at 180 hp/280lb-ft - which just happens to be the spec of the old superseded N47 engine.

So my question is whether anyone can confirm the BMW engine designations of the 20d and 28d engines as used in the LCI X3?

There are two things going on. For one, mainland Europe uses the metric HP, which gives you numbers slightly higher than ours. So 180 hp in the US is 183 hp in Europe. The second thing is that European measurements for hp are different from ours. They tend to list higher in Europe because their standards are looser. You'll notice the EPA fuel economy figures differ from European and Canadian numbers as well; they use a procedure that would be ridiculous for US driving, featuring very non-US habits like not using air conditioning and no hard acceleration, among other things. Check out the fuel economy ratings for the X3 20d in Europe - it hits 47 mpg (US) on the highway, and will not come close to that here on the EPA cycle.

They do sometimes retune engines for other markets, but this is the same engine used in the 328d, which is the same engine in the 320d.

Which is precisely my point. The 20d/28d engine as used in the 320d/328d is the N47 engine. No argument. However in Europe and in other markets (including the Australian market), for the LCI X3 the N47 engine is being replaced with the new B47 engine. Refer linked article. There are probably other articles as well.

And so my question remains. Is the diesel engine being used in the US and Canadian markets in the X3 28d the new B47 or the soon-to-superseded N47 engine? Its not just the power numbers that don't match up - its also the torque values.

The parts system should be updated next week, then we should hopefully be able to check

I have a UK version of the 2.0D SE LCI on order.
My Vehicle contract says " BMW F25 X3 xDrive20d SE B47 2.0d"
So I think its the new B47 engine ???

Your's will be, but the question was aimed towards the 2.8d that will be made available in the US as to whether or not that will use the existing diesel engine or the new B47 engine.

Out of interest, do you currently have a F25 X3 and are you trading that in for the new one? If so, are they offering a decent trade in?

No trade in - this will be my first X3 - been looking to get one for some time and the new LCI clinched it!. Got 9% discount though....

I see what you're saying. Not sure. It seems like we are getting the older version of the engine, though I'm not sure why this would be (emissions?).

It was in fact this review together with the two reviews in the first post that prompted me to ask the question. In this Australian review, I'm the "tonyW" in the comments section.

In the US it's the N47. It just received CARB approval and you can see the N47 engine code in the approval doc: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onroad/..._u2_diesel.pdf
