heated rear seats - can they be retrofitted?
Hi All
I have heated front seats, does anyone know if the heated rear seats can be retrofitted. I have a 2012 f25 2.0d SE. I should imagine this is no more than a heated seat element per side and two switches that I assume sit in the arm rest housing (facing the rear seats). It sounds like it should be easy, but.... |

I know some manufactures actually install the heating elements in all seats but not the switch in the cars without the heated option. All you have to do is install the switch and you're golden. Wish that was the case here!

Doesn't the RealOem site you quoted earlier on show you the standard parts, and the optional parts (for heated seats). Wonder if there is a part code for heated or non heated- I doubt it otherwise there would be too many variations i.e. Standard with/without, Sports with/without, Electric with/without.

Yes it shows the seats there is no mention of any integrated heating element as standard. The heated components are separate.
Wonder how much a dealer would take. Too much probably. |

I looked here
http://parts.bmwofsouthatlanta.com/default.aspx All I could find were rear seat switches. It looks as if all seats are the same besides the leather color and leatherette. So best bet would be to look where the switches would be for rear heating and check for cables. If no cables then find out from someone with rear heated seats where the cable is coming from. There should only be one cable in the rear seats for heat since these are not powered. |

I'd be interested too.
Up here heated rear seats was a $3000 option. OK, officially it was a $500 option but leather was also required which I didn't want. I expect the seating surface is glued to the seat padding which would make a retrofit someone of a pain in the arse.

Adding rear-heated seats is likely to be complicated and expensive.

Nation Geographic's Megafactories has an episode of the x3 production. There was a segment on the seat production and specific seats are made for each order. It's unlikely the electrical for the rear seat heaters is in place... too much bloody work.

My understanding is if certain options are selected, certain options are pre-wired to minimize the different wiring harnesses required (though this could be wrong). Intuitively I would imagine if heated front seats/Cold Weather Package were selected then heated rear seats/Cold Weather Package II could be pre-wired - I haven't pulled the rear seats up to check for a wiring harness, but maybe somebody has? According to realOEM.com the components are available separately:
Seat heaters - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...31&hg=52&fg=65 Trim pieces - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...96&hg=51&fg=35 Switches - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...01&hg=61&fg=35 If the harness is pre-wired, this actually doesn't look that complicated or expensive. I'll continue to dig...

Waiting to hear back from one of my dealer's service guys. The sales manager, a friend of mine, says it looks like it can be done with the parts I listed above but is waiting to confirm with someone who has taken the back seats apart before. I'm optimistic that it should be possible and reasonably priced, but I'm making the assumption this will be for cars with heated front seats rather than all-comers.

Unless I'm mistaken, the pre-wiring would just be the harness. The heater elements are a separate part number and would have to be installed under the seat covers. I don't think there is any other wiring for the seats. My wife has the car and is away for the weekend so I can't check it out right now. Does anyone with heated front seats want to check under their back seats for a wiring harness?

The wiring harness are made to suit the options selected for each vehicle so if you did not order them the cabling wont be there.
Ebay appear to have several Non-OEM options which would be less $100 if you can get under your seats.
