Can bad fuel pump cause no crank?

2005 with 226,000 miles. Original fuel pump.

Intermittent no crank. I removed rear seat and thumped on the fuel pump assembly with a hammer. Car started. Is this a coincidence?

My question: Shouldn't the car crank even if the fuel pump is bad, or does the computer need fuel pressure to satisfy criteria before allowing cranking?

Thank you!

Mike

Yes it should still crank. Check to see if starter is getting power.
Can also see off the fuel rail if you're getting fuel pressure.
