Angry Stealership quote is usually excessive but wow

This is my mom’s ride. A 2014 F25 35i with 85k miles on it. The car had a strange transmission error on the dash so she brought it in. They want $17,000 to fix everything that’s wrong with the car. She had it fully maintained and serviced by these guys since she bought it.

The price to replace the car with a CPO is about the same price as repair.

I’m going to get it looked at by an Indy but has anyone seen eccentric shaft replacements so early in the cars life?

This is why I replace my own cabin and engine air filters. Much cheaper that way.

Never heard of eccentric shaft. Sounds complicated, which is probably why it is nearly half the suggested repair.

If I got an estimate like this for my car (2015 with over 96500 miles) I would seriously consider a new car. And not a BMW next time. Though with the current market, especially if in a rush, I don't know what I would do.

Sounds like this vehicle hasn't had much TLC therefore the neglected item list has grown. Better to go with the CPO

That’s the thing…she did every recommended service and maintenance item.
And shes thinking Subaru.

Here’s the bigger issue: you take a 60k new car, do all the required service and maintenance and the bill within 7 years for service is the same as buying a CPO of the same car. How does that work?

I can confidently say that all these items did not suddenly happen and have been accumulating over time, so whoever was maintaining the vehicle over the years did not notice and or report many of these issues. So glad I do all my own service and repairs.

Overpriced as hell, I'm sure a good indy mechanic can get all that done for probably half. Plus all the bulbs, filters, hose, splash shield prices can get for a lot less than whats listed. Cabin filter, engine filter, even if you're not mechanically competent is so easy to do and you can get the same filters for much less. If you were to pay someone to do the spark plugs indy would probably charge about $200 etc etc find an indy bmw mech

They're probably hoping to scare her out of it and into something new; that way they can sell this one as a one owner special for even more than they'd charge to replace all of those items (which they wouldn't do, btw).

Just one of many reasons I don't trust stealerships, not for work/repairs and not for used car sales.

coolant flush = $221.26

below that

OFHG , which includes making the customer pay for "coolant" = $1446.48

isnt that charging the customer twice?

Maybe that is just the "flush". Getting the coolant out of the car. Didn't say flush and refill

Agreed it's too much. I've done the eccentric shaft on my X3 plus the motor for it and, keeping in mind the repair was discounted since I bought the car from them many years ago, it was a hair over $3000 out the door. Under half what you show above.

It is an expensive repair for sure, it's a full day job for a pro and even if I was to DIY it I'd have been out $2000 or more for parts. But it's definitely not a $6343.08 job.

Looking at the other charges, off the top, half are nonsense. Time for a new shop to quote it for sure. Even then don't show them this, just go in with general subjects like "how much to flush the coolant, and what do you think about the tank being discolored". "This is dripping, do we even care if it won't empty out or strand us on the side of the road".

Some of this is worth doing, some of it clearly not. Your dealership = thieves. Generally I think dealerships get a bad rap and are much better than people think. But... not for that repair quote.

How can lack of maintenance cause the output shaft seal to need replacement, the cooling tank needing replacement, the eccentric shaft needing replacement, thrust arm bushings needing replacement, rdc module reprogramming...? I have a 2012 X3 with 95K miles that have needed none of these items addressed and I do my own basic maintenance. The car has not been to a dealership or other garage since it's 4 years free maintenance program had expired. I think the problem is a dealership that is trying to make up from economic pandemic losses on this one car alone. Find another mechanic.

Update: we took it to an independent - land shark in Natick. For all the work he was half the price but between the list of stuff wrong and the fear of something else failing this early in the cars life, she’s getting rid of the car. Back to leasing it is!
