The 2.0d /does/ have a nice roar ;-)

For those badmouthing the 2.0d. Here's a small clip. I was playing with the new dashcam so thats to topic of the post, but, you can hear the nice throaty noise it makes, I particularly like the range 3-4k rpm. Oh, this was in "Eco Pro" too..

Well, I haven't lost a point on my licence, ever. I don't mind actually lifting at 75mph :-)
Theres LOADS of small roads where I live in Wales where I can depose people with much 'faster' cars, at 60mph, too :>

Mine 'feels' fast up to about 3k revs and then flatlines.
With the right suspension & sport settings and can feel faster.

Its not fast but against most "normal" cars over here it is quick and deceptive too - I love the look of leaving the boy racers behind at lights - and its top speed on an autobahn was over 130mph so I can live with that.

So it is no match for a 3.5 petrol but its a great compromise when fuel costs what it does over here.

On paper, 8.5 seconds 0-60 isn't fast, but I was not referring to a 0-60 drag race. On UK roads, the performance from 0-40 or 50 is very respectable and is faster than most average saloon cars. Considering the size of the car, it is impressive for a four pot 2.0 diesel. Not as fast as my 330i, but fast enough!

In normal driving the 2.0D feels pretty brisk, it's only when you ask it to give more that you find there's not a lot more in reserve. So yes, it does feel quite fast most of the time.

I'd agree with most of the other comments here; the 2.0d is quick enough for most day to day activities. Forget about 0-60 times, I only ever bothered with that when I passed my test to impress my mates. Having said that, when I was young the Escort XR3i/Astra GTE were conisdered hot hatchbacks, and they were both around mid to high 8's, so it's all relative.

In the mid-range, the car has enough pull to keep ahed of most traffic, but it does run out of puff if you ask it bit more if it. My other car is a M3 with the 4.0 V8, and for some reasson the X3 doesn't feel slow when I drive it after having been out in the M.

The important thing for me is that's it's fine for a medium sized 4x4, as it's just not the kind of car I want to thrash so I just take it relatively steady.

Wouldn't mind a 3.0d though; shame you can't get it with a manual 'box.

firstly, that sound clip of the 20d by the OP does indeed sound much better than i thought it might be, having come out of an X1 with the same engine, albeit in 23d tune (twin turbo). that WAS like a tractor.

secondly, having now taken delivery of the 30d variant of the X3, I can easily see how the 20d would be more than enough for most. Even with the extra shove of the 30d, I don't feel the need to use it as it's a nice car to just lazily cruise around in. However, the sound of the 6cl D engine is something quite lovely, and very refined.

thirdly, I came from the E60 M5 (V10), and can happily say that the 30D, although a LOT slower in performance, has more "usable" performance... and I should be able to keep the points off the license easier.

to sum up .. the 20D, in my opinion, IS fast enough.

If I drove your 20d, I'd be bragging about my fuel economy. The other guys are probably paying a fortune for fuel each week just so they can beat somebody when the light turns green. Occasionally, I pass somebody in a Model T and the smile on their face is bigger than mine even though their 0-60 time is probably 25 seconds (can they even get to 60?)

Drove 20D before I ordered my 30D. 20D is a good engine, but I'm certainly happy about getting the 30D. All it takes to bring out the extra smile is to be first on a traffic light.

Waiting for green I put it in Sport+, engage the Auto Hold, and drop the lever to the left...and wait....and then floor it, feel the pressure and hear the roar... Not to offend the 20D owners, but this is a true roar. Of course a 6cylinder Petrol or a V8 is better but nevertheless. Check the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz28kcOij4E

Even on regular driving the whole car feels more massive than the 20D if you know what I mean.

If you are able to...go for the bigger engine!

Here in the US, minvans can go faster than from 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds. I guess we have different standards, I dont consider any car quick unless it can break the 0-60 in less than 6 seconds mark.

Well yes - except we so enjoy driving our X3 that we spend our time finding places to go, trips and holidays etc.
We normally do a 10K miles a year - we did 15K miles in the BMW since we had it a year ago - but it is so much fun to drive we don't car. So its a good job it does do 40mpg..

Men and cars eh !! "mine is bigger (or sounds better) than yours"..... sounds like you are closet drag racing driver

I have to say that I gave up racing away from green lights long ago. I went with the 20d for a number of reasons none of which involved the sound of the engine or how quick I could race away from a green light. Mostly to do with the initial cost and ongoing running costs. I was perfectly happy with the performance of my 520d even though the 530d sounded better and Im hoping that I will be just as happy with the 20d in the X3.

@clive

+1. Would prefer the 30d but overall very happy with my 20d and its low road tax band ;-). You just get the odd reminder of its limitations when driving sometimes

I would normally have quoted the post I was plus one-ing but the iPhone app seems currently unable to do that and instead deletes what you've written and shows an error
