Sard did you ever figure out this noise? I think my X3 does it a little bit, it doesn't really sound like a problem I barely would notice it except for a recent drive w/o music and this thread. not entirely sure its the same noise seems to be around 2nd gear when starting from a stop. not really sure its a problem noise either.

Nah, still at 1100 miles. I'm hearing a similar "whirring" sound even in normal now. It's a litlte lower pitch than the one in sport mode. I usually just hear it once from dead stop acceleration early on.

Just had a baby so that has kinda been placed on the back burner.

Even my first 35i back in February did this. When I first took delivery, I was driving through the ravines in the suburbs and I heard the howling noise. I thought it was a wolf or some other night-howling creature. Then I grew to realize it was just the turbo. My 2008 535xi Wagon made almost the same noise. The F10 535i loaners I had this year also did the same thing, but it was a bit quieter; for scale, know that I had seven loaners from February to August. It was heard in all cars with the windows both down and up.

What's different about the X3 35i is that you can hear some very extreme HISSing when accelerating hard in Sport Drivetrain using manual shifting (windows down). It freaks people out, but I love it.

Always look on the bright side of life

It's a benefit of having sport mode. You should just look at it as part of the bright side of life...

Same faint whistle sound on my 135i

Thank god it's not just me hearing things. The sound/whistle almost sounds like someone is softly whistling with an empty bottle. Check this link and the sound is like the first or second whistle in the video. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HT...ng-on-bottles/

It started happening (or at least that I started noticing it) about a month ago. Now it seems to be getting louder. Happens in same conditions as in your X3. The only mod I have on my 2011 135i is the BMW PPK.

I took my 2013 X3 35i in at about 1500 miles to get checked out once the whistle noise started. Service rep said it was the turbos and that it was perfectly normal. I pointed out to him that it didn't start till after the break-in period when I was driving more in sport mode. Now I can hear the whistle even in eco pro mode, although I have to admit it's really not that bad.

Mine does same thing on 2011 35i. I'd call it more of a "whirring". Drives me crazy but doesn't seem to affect anything. Seems to be getting slowly worse though.

My UK spec gets a slight whining noise under very light acceleration around 20 to 30 mph, it's only mildly irritating but I will bring it up at its first service. I've always assumed that it is coming from the gearbox rather than the engine though.

I don't get annoyed with the 'wastegate' sound... I think it's neat.

It can be avoided if your drive in ecoPro mode.

Sorry to respond so late. I don't visit the X3 forums anymore. Partly due to the 2 year old sucking the life out of me. haha j/k.

The X3's the same. Had a technician look at it once. Said he couldn't even hear it. Lol...whatever...
