Value of 2013 X3 28i with Remanufactured Engine
I recently had an engine failure of my 2013 X3 28i and it was replaced under warranty. The Service Advisor said the new engine is a 2013 spec Remanufactured N20 that would have cost $23,000 with labor.
What does this do to the value of the car if I am looking to trade it in on a 2016 X3? The car has 38,000 miles and about 200 miles on the new engine. Thanks George |

I purchased the car with 33,000 miles.
Within the first week I noticed excessive exhaust smoke on startup. It was diagnosed as an turbo oil line leak and fixed under warranty. Within 30 miles of the oil line being fixed, there was a failure of the oil line resulting in an engine fire. The oil line and fire damage was fixed under warranty. At 38,000 miles I got a drivetrain error. The dealer said there were multiple Vanos failures due to sludge in the engine. The engine was replaced under warranty. I loved my 2007 BMW X3 and had it for 167,000 miles; it was very reliable. My 2013 X3 handles much better but I am now wary of the N20 engine. George |

I was lucky that BMW decided to replace the entire engine under warranty. The dealer did mention some alternatives but said there was sludge everywhere and he was not confident the alternatives would be a permanent fix.
I am happy with a remanufactured engine. George |

I am not sure what type of oil filter housing the previous engine had, it was replaced.
I did get a new (built to 2013 spec) engine; BMW calls that a remanufactured engine. The engine light came on after 100 miles. After the dealer had the car for several days it was determined the wrong fuel injector part number was placed in the 'new' engine and they were replaced. I am very glad the car is still under warranty and I don't think I will be getting an extended warranty for this car. I had thought having a new engine would enhance the value of the car. Thanks George |

As I understand there is no correlation between engine swap and price. KBB, NADA and so do not take that into account. Someone particular may think new engine is better than original and that justifies even higher price. Other may think engine swap may be due to user neglect, and totally ban the car. Who knows....

Drive Train failure at 42K 2014 X3
Hi All,
I need your advice on how to handle this. I bought brand new 2014 X3 and has 42K miles on it now. Warranty will run out by Sep 2017. I wasn't planning to take extended warranty until this happened -- drivetrain malfunction. This is my first BMW that I own. The SA mentioned below in the email . I was hoping to use this car until 100,000 miles. But I lost my confidence in it. It has been with service center past 1 week. I wanted BMW to provided me full warranty at least until 100,000 K miles. Any suggestions for me on how i can do that? HOOKED UP BATTERY CHARGER, CHARGED BATTERY, RAN SHORT TEST, FOUND MISFIRE FAULTS IN CYL 2 AND 4. MOVED COILS DID NOT FOLLOW, MOVED PLUGS, MISFIRES DID NOT FOLLOW, RAN INJECTOR TEST PLAN. SOFTWARE OUT OF DATE, AND INJECTORS LEAKING DOWN. (10181) REPLACED ALL FUEL INJECTORS AND PROGRAMMED/ENCODED CONTROL MODULES PER TEST PLAN DIAG. MISFIRE STILL PRESENT. (10648) RAN COMPRESSION TEST OF ENGINE AND FOUND THAT COMPRESSION OF CYLINDERS 1 THRU 3 WAS AROUND 215PSI. CYLINDER 4 ONLY HAD A COMPRESSION READING OF 50PSI. PERFORMED CYLINDER LEAKAGE TEST ON ENGINE AND LEAKAGE OF CYLINDER 1 THRU 3 WAS LESS THAN 10% AND CYLINDER 4 WAS 100%. USED SMOKE MACHINE TO DETERMINE WHERE THE LEAKAGE WAS COMING FROM AND FOUND THAT SMOKE WAS ESCAPING THROUGH THE EXHAUST VALVES. NEED TO DISASSEMBLE ENGINE TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE. (11) REMOVED THE HEAD TO INSPECT FOR CAUSE OF FAILURE. FOUND THE EXHAUST VALVE SEAT ON CYLINDER 4 IS NOT FULLY CLOSING PREVENTING IT FROM BUILDING COMPRESSION. SENT CYLINDER HEAD TO MACHINE FOR INSPECTION OF CAUSE OF FAILURE. Thanks |
