Tirerack: Anyone near South Bend IN?

Tirerack needs a new X3 so they can verify wheel fitment. Anyone near there want to swing by and help out the X3 community?

Let me preface this with a disclaimer: I am not, nor do I claim to be a tire expert. I cannot say that if you follow my advice it will work 100%. I just simply used the specs of the vehicle to come to the conclusion that going this route will work.

I actually ordered a wheel/tire package a few days ago from Tire Rack. I'm picking my X3 up at the Performance Center next Friday and had TR ship everything to an installer in Greenville, SC. They don't have any info on the new X3 except for tire size right now so I got around it by seeing what was available for the 2010 X3.

The most important thing will be the offset of the wheels. The 2010 X3 has an offset of +42mm for the 18" wheels. The 2011 X3 has an offset of +43mm. On the website, if you look at what is available for the 2010 X3 you can order off that. Just pay attention to the offsets. I went with 18" Enkei EKM3 (+42 offset), so the wheels will stick out 1mm more than stock (search online for a wheel offset calculator to see what the effect will be with various offsets).

As for tire size, I went with the stock 245/50R18 square setup. Note that if you click on Winter Tire Packages on Tire Rack, they will default to the 2010 X3's stock tire size of 235/50R18, which is within acceptable limits. I wanted the Dunlop Wintersport 3D runflats (wife will be driving the car), which are not available in this size so that's why my order is a little different.

Hopefully, this helps some.

That is what I plan on doing if tirerack doesn't update its info. I would hope we would have some leeway regarding offset due to the ride height… when you check the X3's stock wheel's offsets at realoem's website they vary depending on the width of the wheels (from 38 front to 51 rear).

I really want to run my set of volk racing re30s that I currently use for my E92's summer wheels - and they have an offset of 35mm front and rear. The fronts should be close to the oem 38 offset for 8.5 inch wide wheels, the rears would stick out 1/2 inch further than the 51 offset (for 9.5 inch wide wheels) for the oem wheels. I will probably just have to try it out to see if it would work.

I'd like 18" dunlop's and I want to use the stock rims. So the 235/50r18 will fit the stock wheels? Or did tirerack not have the dunlops in 245/50r18?

Also, I want different wheels/tires for the summer, 19" , let me know if anyone picked out anything yet for this summer. We're just a couple of months away from no snow!

235s and 245s will both fit the stock 18 inch wheels.

buckeyesi,

Like you, I'm no tire expert, but:

Are you sure that the Enkei's will work with the Dunlop runflats if you do get a puncture? It's my understanding, and seems to be supported by BMW's webpage about the runflat technology, that to have runflat capability, you need special rims with an additional "hump" inside of the bead mounting area. That apparently keeps the tire bead on the rim if you loose air pressure. Without that additional "hump" it would seem that the bead could unseat and destroy the tire as soon as you tried to make a left or right turn with a flat (even with the super stiff runflat sidewalls). BMW implies that it's the tire/rim combo that gives you runflat capability, not the tires alone.

Hopefully, the guys/gals at TireRack will know if runflat tires will work properly on conventional rims.

I'm also looking for a set of winter tires, but don't want to spend $3K of a set of BMW OEM wheels for them if possible.

The OE 19s are 19x8.5 et38 (front) and 19x9.5 et48 (rear). 245/45/19 and 275/40/19 for the tires front and back respectively. You would want to be close to those specs.

My 3.5i is coming with 19's with summer tires; the style 309 which I believe are front 245/45-19 and rear 275/40-19. If that's what you're looking for . . .

The Tirerack now has the Pirelli SottoZero Series II "Two Season" tires in the sizes for the 309's -- only the standard tires, though, not the runflat version. Hoping they stock the runflats soon!

I'm just waiting until they post their wheel selection and 19" summer selection. Are you going to order the 2 fronts and 2 backs in different sizes or just 1 size for all 4 summers?

The summers are already on the 19" style 309's mine comes with; so mine will be mixed. I need Winters. Trying to decide whether to get another set of 309's and get the Pirelli SottoZero "Two Season" runflats if/when Tirerack stocks them, or to do something else.

Winters aren't bad here, but there are a few days where the Summer tires aren't going to really cut it. I don't want to go with a real "serious Winter" set based on appearance and that most of the time it'll just be moderate cold/wet roads. That's why I'm leaning toward the nicer wheels and the two season tires.

Anyone planning on running non-runflat snows? This runflat deal is preventing me from pulling the trigger. I like running studs on my 04 X3 and want to do the same on the '11.
