Remember folks of hatred. This is only a stepping stone to the real M. And to please the demands and desires that customers have, BMW had no choice but to put this out to the public.
This will be a great SAV and it will fill in the hole; for now. And tuners will find a safe and reliable way to get 440hp out of this engine. It's funny, remember when the 1st 4.8is X5 came out. People were drooling for that NA inspired 355 hp V8. It was an amazing engine, developed by the M division. For its time, even that X5 was very capable. Now this new technology, and light weight materials, the x4 with 355hp will be the real deal, at least until then X3M/X4M come out in 2 years. |

I just checked out the national inventory. There are dealers marking them down from sticker. Hmmm...
Anyone else think there are too many letters on the back? Couldn't they have called it an M40iX?

If the back seas are smaller than the X5 make sure your passengers are not bigger the 5' 8"

I drove a lower powered X4 and i was pleasantly surprised. Since then, I am a believer so this top dog would be a blast to drive, i can only imagine.
For more practicality, i think a X3 M40i would be a better choice personally. The X4 is still very nice. I am well over its look now. |

The original comment was saying a potential for F85 levels of power to weight ratio. The guy you quoted either misunderstood or wasn't being clear enough. |

-specially tuned sports chassis - stronger springs and stabilizers - increased camber on the front axle - adaptive dampers specifically tuned to M Performance specifications - xDrive all-wheel drive system has been recalibrated with more power routed to the rear wheels during normal operation - Performance Control ensures a responsive steering with more road feedback as well confident dynamics due to a specific tuning of the steering In addition to a higher level of turbo boost pressure and an increase in the amount of fuel injected, the engine has been fitted with an aerodynamically tuned air intake manifold as well as an exhaust system optimized both in terms of back pressure and sound characteristics in order to enhance performance. A separate oil cooler guarantees that the optimum operating temperature of this extremely powerful engine is maintained under all driving conditions. The radical technical changes include, an intelligent valve control, a back pressure-optimized double-flow exhaust system fitted beneath the floor of the vehicle, as well as resonator tuning specific to M Performance. The result is a powerful sound, individually determined by the driver depending on driving mode and driving situation, perfectly emphasizing the car's sporty character acoustically. So for the price, it's not a WOW but its an improvement and update. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...x4-m40i-review http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=898159

The hate comes from the coupe SUV concept. It's objectively a stupid design and subjectively ugly.
If this was the X3 M40i, I would say it's awesome. I love our SQ5 but if an X3 version of this would have been around 2 years ago, I probably would have gone BMW. There is no way in hell I would ditch the SQ5 for an X4 no matter how much power it has. And regarding the xDrive vs Quattro argument, it all depends on how BMW tunes their xDrive. Quattro with Torsen or Quattro/Haldex are known entities and Torsen is great and Haldex is boring. xDrive is a little more nebulous between vehicles in their lineup, but at least with it on my M235i it is spectacular for sporty driving and traction. It is very rear wheel biased in the M235i so if they engineer it the same way with the M40i, I would take that over the Audi with Torsen Quattro due to superior weight balance in the BMW.
