Auto Start/Stop = more engine wear??

Hi All,

The new start stop feature takes some getting used to......get to a traffic light, stop...then silence :P
Any idea if this actually increases engine wear with all the starting and stopping? Also I thought it would use up more petrol starting the engine that leaving it idle for the 10-20 secs you are at a light. Some times only been stopped for 1-2 before the light changes.

Thanks
Rod

Roders, I read somewhere that BMW beefed up the starter motor which would be the only thing I expect to wear. This is the second car we have with start-stop (the first is the M3) and you will learn to turn it off soon. Lol

I've got it on my current loaner ... a 318d SE saloon. Took a bit of getting used to but when it's returning 55mpg on a run from Leeds to Slough I'm not messing with any of the economy features. As a company car driver I now make money out of my mileage.

I think I read that auto stop/start makes net fuel savings after 7 seconds of the engine being off.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I wouldn't worry about engine wear. That's mainly an issue on cold starts.

How well does this start/stop thing let y'all take off from a light? If you're first in line is it a notable pause as the engine kicks in and you get rolling? Or is it close enough to normal that you don't mind?

BMW has made (published) claims that the auto start-stop component of their "Efficient Dynamics" package can reduce fuel consumption "as much as 3%" on the X3 20d and "as much as" 8% on the M3 4-liter V8 as measured on the "NEDC" "New European Driving Cycle". That test includes 14 full stops of between 30 and 60 seconds each over the 6512 meter course. The average speed is 20.21 kph with a maximum of 70.86 kph. It simulates very slow European city driving (with a lot of stops). I'm no Cadel Evans, but I can average better than 20.21 kph on a bike using "0" petrol!

The NEDC has been criticized by almost everyone as being "not very realistic", but that's what we have and it is OK for comparisons between different vehicles.

Obviously, if you don't stop very much or sit in traffic with your engine idling and not moving, it (the auto start-stop function)has little or no value.

We have an Amber get ready signal first in the UK before green. It's quick enough that if you release your foot from the brake or touch the accelerator (if using auto hold) on amber, you'll be away quicker than most drivers. I would say it's less than a second.

There is a button next to the Start button to turn off the Auto Start/Stop.
But everytime you turn off your car and come back, by default its on again.

Just keep it in Sports mode (DS), and Start/stop is no issue.

Is there a way to always keep it in Sports mode?
Everytime I turn off the car and come back it to Normal mode
