Red Brake Warning Light (!)

BMW E83 X3 (2005) 2.0d with a recurring red brake warning light (!). The same indication light that is used for the handbrake and to indicate low brake fluid level.

Brake pad wear sensors have been replaced and the fluid level sensor has been checked. The warning light does not come on immediately, it functions normally when releasing or engaging the handbrake. The warning light comes on once the vehicle gets moving, usually with a chime but not always.

No other warning lights and a code reader has not identified any codes. It appears one of the wheel speed sensors has been replaced. I haven’t found any information to suggest wheel speed sensors are part of the indication system.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
