To DHP or NOT DHP???
I\'m getting ready to place my order for a 2012 X328i....
My question is for those who already have their X3\'s.... Is DHP a MUST have option??? or can I go with out DHP and it won\'t much difference??? I am getting the SPORT ACTIVITY PACKAGE... Your input is greatly appreciated.

For me it was a deal-breaker on my wife's truck. Without it we would have bought something different. It means I get to drive and ride in something that doesn't feel like a waterbed with hiccups, which is what the standard suspension feels like. Set the button to "Sport" (using Vestal Virgins to lick the button into place for the lazy) and don't look back.

i would say if you are replacing a 3 series w/ an X3 you probably want DHP. if you are coming out of a bigger SUV (not counting the X5) you prob won't care.
i really am glad i added DHP when it was time to place my order - def the right call. actually the only package i could live w/o is convenience - all nice stuff, nothing thats a necessity.

Depends on how you drive and where you drive.
I have the Sport Activity and NO DHP. I am a daily home to work and back driver wit occasional long road trips. I do not regret not having DHP. |

I was coming from a 135i cabriolet so I had to have DHP. Love the ability to adjust the suspension and steering feel. Since it's electric versus hydraulic it was already going to be worse so I just wanted to minimize how much worse it would be.

Get DHP, Otherwise you'll never be sure that you would not have preferred the car with it. Not knowing if you made the right choice will drive you crazy. The strain will ruin your relationship with your spouse or significant other. Your family will disown you, you won't be able to function at work, and you'll wind up homeless, living from hand to mouth in your non-DHP X3 28i, which you will despise.
If you’re lucky, you’ll find a local chapter of “NON-DSP Owners Anonymous” to join, but attending the weekly meetings will only make you more depressed – Who wants to hang out with a bunch of guys who made the wrong decision? Don’t let this happen to you! |

i want to thank all the people on this forum for talking me into DHP - it was not my intention originally - but i have it.
question - looks like there is a setting that I can set the sport mode button to chasis (steering and suspension) and transmission - or just chasis or transmission. I really want it for suspension and steering - would like to use sport mode on the transmission but not necessary at the same time. actually i'd like to keep the suspension in sport mode most or all of the time. so the question - can I set the sport mode button to chasis only - and still use the sport mode on the shifter to get the transmission in and out of sport independently? is sport mode from the DHP button the same as sport mode on the shift lever? I have SAP and DHP if that matters I have a few idrive questions for another thread as well

My understanding is yes, you can program Sports mode to do suspension settings, and sports+ mode will be suspension + throttle response/shift points.

Yes, you can configure sport setting to only apply to the suspension and steering and not at all to throttle response rpm increase..

When thinking about the opinions on DHP (aka VDC) it's important to take into account the difference suspension setups in your part of the world.
To my knowledge the US (and Canada?) is unique in having a soft standard setup. 1) Soft (US or NA) 2) Medium (rest of the world, often on what are called SE spec cars) 3) Sports Suspension (an option or on MSport outside the US) If you have 1) then of the only way to get a sportier drive is DHP. What we don't know does the DHP get you to 2) or 3) in it's firmest setup, or indeed something different. If outside the US you have 2) or 3) ("fixed" suspension) is DHP (VDC) like a switch between 2) and 3) or is it like varying between 1)and 3)?

Drivetrain should control sport mode on the transmission - if its set for drivetrain only or chasis+drivetrain. how is this sport mode on the transmission different from sport mode turned on by moving the shift lever to the left? Anyway I have set my sport mode button to chasis only - so I get DDC and Var. Sport Steering, but normal mode for the transmission. If i want sport mode on the transmission i will get it from the shift lever. If you have an X3 with SAP or M sport but NOT DHP then do you still have the sport mode button? i would think if so it only controls drivetrain...unless I'm missing something here. back to the original point of this thread, get DHP, i much prefer the drive with it now that i've set it for chasis only.

To further muddy the waters, damping control is automatic based on feedback from the road and sensors that adjust the suspension. It makes sense that if you have damping control (VDC/DHP) that you could adjust the behaviour of this damping and damp more or less for softer or firmer suspension. But if you don't have this capability (no damping), how does changing the "chassis" actually do anything to the suspension? What is actually happening?
I know Sport and Sport+ are identical except for DSC help but I've never understood how cars without VDC or DHP are actually changing the suspension/chassis All i know is I'm glad I went for sports suspension + servo + 19s + perf control as it's combination that works well for me

On my 35i with SAP, I have the Normal, Sport and Sport+ rocker switch. In my I-drive menu, I can choose sport mode to chassis only or both the chassis and drivetrain. When in sport mode, my steering tightens up, shift points are higher and you can really feel every stinkin bump in the road. In normal mode, the bumps aren't near as bad. DHP goes above and beyond that by sensoring each wheel and adjusting the suspension (chassis) as you go over each and every bump. |

Same here... I have a USA 35i with SAP (no DHP), perfectly happy with my ability to change between normal / sport / sport +. The drive screen does indicate that sport mode changes drivetrain AND CHASSIS setup.
