F25er, the accelerator is a safety feature... no question about that.

Justifying one engine over another because of acceleration might be a stretch

there's a reason they make different models.

Agreed. Just trying to inject a little honesty here.

35i - $47400

Engine
Sport steering wheel
Wood trim
Bi-xenons
HiFi sound.

It's up to the individual if the five items above are worth 5 grand. What I chose instead was the 28i with a premium package which gave me for $3600 the following:

X line
Panorama roof
Auto dimming exterior mirrors
Auto dimming interior mirror
Park distance control front and rear
Bi-xenons

All this came in at $46050 which with all these features is still $1350 less than a "base" 35i. It's clear to me which model is the real value.

It comes down to the engine. The N55 is awesome in every way there is no doubt about it. For me however the above value was hard to ignore, add to this the fact that the N20 is super efficient and only 1 second slower to 60mph and it's a winner.
You guys are getting hosed in Canada. The panorama roof is standard on the 35 here(U.S). Is it not in Canada? That might change things for me. As it stands here a $2500 price tag on the N55 engine represents significant value to me.

Fryguy29, no kidding we do get hosed... don't get me started with the "included" power lift-gate on the US models... it's only available in conjunction with a $4000 option in Canada.

Admit it it's nothing more than engine lust pure and simple. Not that there's anything wrong with that, the N55 evokes lust. Let's just not pretend its safety and value that drove the decision.

Human nature: emotion trumps logic.

Disagree..I don't think it's exactly one or the other...it's a combination of a lot of things.

For mostly the U.S. market the 35i is not that much more $$ than a 28i when you start adding in the packages so there is a price point there that some people with the extra cash see and leap for the 35i and people without the cash choose not to.

Then there's the power of the engine..and sound ...and smoothness etc. Which are all subjective.

Then there's a safety factor but that depends on the driver. I like a spirited vehicle something that can move when I need it to in case stupid people do stupid things and I have to avoid them quickly. I hate going come on come on come on when i mash the gas ..drives me nuts probably why I'm yet to buy something under 300 hp

My point ...hmmm ...pick according to your needs and how you drive and the $$ you got...with a little sense thrown into the mix

Both engines are great and you really can't go wrong with either one. As mentioned before in the US the price difference between the two is only about $2500.

While the new N20 is a great engine and is in fact underrated from the factory the N55 itself is also underrated compared to BMW's official figures. From most of the articles I've seen the N20 makes about 272HP and 277 lb-ft torque at the crank whereas the N55 makes about 324HP and 327 lb-ft torque.

I agree. All of the dyno tests comparing the N20 and N55 are done with RWD 3-series'. X3s only come in AWD so we can expect lower power figures due to increased drivetrain loss.

well for ppl who ordered it when it first came out it was no brainer to go 35i here in Canada especially when the 28i was getting phased out.

The turbo 4 is no slouch by any means. I will concede, it does sound like a diesel with little man syndrome, but in sport mode it absolutely flies. You really will be surprised thats its just a 4 banger moving you around so quickly.

After just a few days after taking deliver, I can also verify this is no slouch. I can go from 0-90 in about 15 seconds without breaking 4000rpm. The low end torque is amazing. I'll wait about 1000 miles before I put the throttle to the floor and open her up. So far, I have no concerns about power. It just moves without making a lot of noise.

I noticed that climbing some of the hills here in Seattle (some steep grades) where it climbs or maintains the speed without going over 2000rpm. The power curve is a whole other world compared to my 2003 325xi and will take some time to get used to it.

Wooo I think we're up to about 5 Washingtonians on this forum.

Seattle does indeed have some very hilly areas and it's very cool to go up them with speed and not even break 2000 rpm.

(first post-longtime lurker)

Yay hill power! I am about to order my X3, and am still handwringing about 28i vs 35i. We live in very hilly bellevue, but most of my commute will be on the 405. We do plan some windy road trips, though, so I would love to keep hearing your impressions of the 28i !!

thanks for all the sharing!!!

Speaking of hills, I took my X3 28i (NA 6cyl) over the North Cascades highway last weekend and was pleasantly surprised with the performance at higher altitudes and on winding mountain roads.

Scheduled to pick-up the 28i next week via PCD. We drove the 35i and the 28i extensively for comparison. In anything close to normal driving situations it' hard to tell much difference. The 4 turbo deifinitely seems to out perform the older non-boosted 6. The torque cure is almost a flat line for the 4 and comes at relatively low rpms. I'm sure the 35i would greatly out perform the 28i on a track, but for most driving situations, we chose the 28i.
