Space saver spare wheel - part number?
The USA edition of the X3 F25 owners manual, lists a 135/80 R18 104 wheel as fitting the car.
Obviously this is a space saver spare and the car doesn't have anywhere to store it (except in the boot). I'd like to buy one of these to keep at home (might throw it in the boot on long trips) I asked my BMW dealer but they said they didn't have any details... Has anyone got a part number?? Thanks - Guy |

As with all wheel changes there are other things to consider like offset (although the standard E83 wheels do not vary that much from those on the F25.
The part number for the F25 spare wheel is 36116796147 for the wheel only and 36112187043 for the wheel with tire. It is a light alloy wheel, 18" diameter, 4.5" wide with an offset of 1mm. The E83 spare wheel has part number of 36116758778 for the wheel only (it doesn't seem to be available with a tire). It is steel, 17" diameter, 4" wide with an offset of 18mm. The E83 wheel may or may not work on the F25 but I certainly wouldn't rely on one without trying it first. I seem to recall that regular 17" wheels do not officially fit the 35 as the latter have larger brakes than the 28. However it seems that some will fit, albeit with very close clearances. |

Presumably, the E83's space saver spare has the same O.D as the OEM tires. The 2% difference will probably work on the vehicle, but because the wheel with the E83 spare will be turning at a slightly faster speed than the others, it's possible that the vehicle will trigger a ABS and stability control fault warning. A 2% speed differential probably won't cause any wear problems on the differential or transfer case for a short drive (as long as speeds are low), but it's just enough to trigger a fault code and warning lights. On non-USA F25 vehicles that use the differential speed TPMS system, it will also trigger a "low tire" warning because of the speed error. On US F25s with the RF based TPMS (transmitter-equipped) system, a warning will be triggered because of the lack of a transmitter in the spare wheel. It may work, but should not be used for anything other than a short drive to a repair facility. Last edited by Lotus7; 10-02-2011 at 10:54 AM.. |

My comments:
If a temporary spare wheel is in use it is likely that there has been a puncture so the tire monitoring system will already have been activated. The E70 and E71 have a factory temporary spare wheel option that does not include TPMS (as in my US X6) so presumably the TPMS can handle running with a non-TPMS temporary spare without upsetting too many things. It seems to me that the 2% difference in revs per mile you quote is within the range that one gets between the different tire manufacturers that BMW use in production so I suspect that it is not an issue. |

Even though BMW may use different brands, you will never see them mixing brands on the same vehicle. Again, a short drive at low speeds certainly should not be a problem, but leaving a different sized tire on for any significant distance or driving at high speeds is obviously not a good idea for many reasons. Unfortunately, I've seen people bombing along on the Interstate at 70 mph on a (probably underinflated) space saver rated for 50 mph on more than one occasion, so nothing surprises me. Is the X3 F25 space saver (and tyre) still available for order, and has anyone actually purchased one and used it?

A word of warning following on from Lotus7's comments (please come back) in the replies above.
I am very surprised this space saver tyre and wheel is listed for use on an F25 X3. The 135/80/18 tyre size gives an overall diameter of 673mm (26.5in). Compare this with the F25's OEM tyre diameters of around 702-703mm (27.6ins) regardless of wheel size. This a an overall rolling diameter difference of more than 4% or 1 inch. While you may be able to get away with having all 4 tyres having a 4% difference from OEM (I've been running 2% oversize tyres for over 2 years and 50,000 km without issue), I'd be worried about having such an undersized tyre on just one corner. And my other thought on this is that given that even this space saver will not fit below the luggage area floor you will have to strap it down on top of the floor. No issues with that, but if you are going to go to all that trouble why not just have a full size spare tied down in the back? Tony |

Space Saver Tyres are exactly that!.......if you did what you suggest would you want a 'front' spare or 'rear' spare in the load area being 8'' or 9'' (or whatever the width is) OR a 4'' wide tyre! ie a 'space saver'!! with the addional less weight to lug around. |

Philtrick - Can you tell me where the price you show was being offered?
Snows BMW in Portsmouth want to charge £300 for the wheel & tyre (excluding tools) - seems a bit up. Any one know any UK prices nearer to Philtrick's find of £181 + VAT = £217? Cheers - Roger An answer the question of why not just carry a full size wheel. Which one? the 19 inch wheels outside the US are mostly staggered. Plus, 13Kg versus about 30Kg |

Out of curiosity I'd also be interested in hearing any feedback on this. Not just from people who have purchased this space saver spare, but more importantly, people who have actually put it on their F25 and driven it. I'm still not convinced that the (admittedly theoretical) 1 inch difference in overall diameter from the other 3 tyres will not cause problems with driving the car.
