X3 Efficency

Just curious to see what numbers other members get from their X3's (mine is a 3.0D).

Had a longist drive and got the following numbers. The journey was a cold start some town driving (Hereford down the A49 which is slow) then about 50/50 A roads and motorway, wasn't in a real hurry so stayed just about legal.

1st check 22miles in from cold - 50.2 mpg @ 43.8 mph = Eff of 94

Name: Eff2.jpg
Views: 2685
Size: 76.6 KB

2nd check at the end 338 miles - 45.4 mpg @ 60.8 mph

Name: Eff1.jpg
Views: 2629
Size: 120.1 KB

I did fill the tank at the end and the number looked about right.

And I thought my 35D did well returning 36.5mpg after just over 3000 miles around France!! That included all types of driving from motorways at 130kph to clambering up moutains in The Alps as well as driving through crowded cities and twisty hairpin bends around Nice and Monaco. Can't see mine ever getting to 50mpg on the trip computer!! But not complaining!!

One more to add from an A road trip today.

Nice because the numbers are equal 49.2 mpg @ 49.2mph. I wonder if I will hit 50 @ 50 once I get some more miles on the engine, currently just past 4500.

troggy1969 - I hope both the trip computer is accurate and that I can get close to those figures when my X3 30d arrives next month. My current 4x4 (Hyundai SF) is lucky to get mid 35 with mixed driving.
Unfortunatly I can't see myself being light on the right foot with the power available.

2.0d auto - MPG

Looking at your figures for your 3.0d I am very impressed. I have the 2.0d auto and have covered just short of 2k miles. My average on the screen shows 38.5mpg.
On a recent trip to York from Surrey I managed to achieve 45mpg at varying speeds of 70 to 85mph. Certainly haven't got anywhere near 50mpg.

Would of liked the extra power of 3.0d. going by the economy of it should of gone for it and dropped a few extras instead.

never mind, still a great car!

You'll easily get over 50mpg if you drop down to 60mph, or just under. My average is probably about 32mpg now (after 11000 miles) but it's meaningless as a comparison because of the number of frequent short trips that are made. If you commute 30 miles each day and average about 50mph you'll get a much higher overall mpg.

All of that said, the 30d has very impressive figures that are pretty close to the 20d but then if you drive the 30d conservatively you could argue you should have bought the 20d. I'd buy a 30d if I had the choice now just so I had the option of the extra power when needed

I think I've managed 52mpg over 80 miles but can't remember exactly - that was driving around 60mph, no cruise control, and trying hard to maximise the mpg on hills etc (cruise control not as efficient over hills)

^ this.

Driving as much like an old man as I can, the best I've ever gotten out of a full tank in my 28i is 27.3mpg and that was mostly downhill from the continental divide to boot. No idea why the EPA believes the insanity around diesel engines and pollution.

Bear in mind you need to divide our imperial mpg by 1.2 to get your equivalent US mpg so 50mpg is only 42mpg (US) .

I can't defend the spelling though

60 mph was an average including A roads, town with plenty of stop start and roundabouts, then some motorway to finish (A49 through Hereford, through Gloucester, down the M5, A38 and finally some minor roads on Dartmoor) before returning. Motorway average speed 70 – 80 mph, other roads as fast as possible but heavy traffic.

The 50 mph A road average (60mph max legal) is more realistic to real world (A49 & A5) again with plenty of roundabouts and slow traffic to pass.

Don’t worry, I do uphold the BMW tradition and have hit the 130mph limiter a number of time (can’t say where), but the only time I get sub 40mpg is short trips into town or fast motorway, the average of which cannot be published!!!!

I am curious to see what other journey combinations people are getting and is there a big difference between engines. Overall I am getting 42.3mpg.

Sorry about the spelling, it was late when I put up the original post!!!!!

Given this description, I conclude your 30d is more efficient that my 20d. I am already bitter about not being able to get the 30d when I ordered, and this is rubbing more salt in the wound!

Not sure I follow your logic, as a Passat Bluemotion won't meet the official figures any more than a BMW, unless you drive lightly.

As to efficiency and engine size, my son runs the previous generation (E83) X3. He was running the 2.0d manual but exchanged for a 3.0sd. The 3.0sd with premium performance and auto gearbox returns very similar mpg, within about 2mpg driving the same trips. But the 3.0sd is in a different league, performance that allows proper overtaking, is far more relaxed, sounds better as well. All for a couple of mpg.

Even on BMW's official figures there is only 3.3 mpg difference (combined test) between the 20d and 30d. The main saving will not come from the mpg difference, it will come from the list price. The £4000 you save (when you factor in the auto box + metalic paint on 30d) would buy you approx 25,000 miles of fuel. Come resale time in 3 years I'm guessing the 30d will be worth £2k more then a 20d- so that means 12,500 worth of fuel.... hmmm

That's why my original budget was 20d money, and I thought 'stuff it' pay the extra and get what I want i.e. 30d. The problem is if you follow that reasoning you end with the 35d

EDIT- Please note the above does not include additional insurance for 30d etc etc. Back of a *** packet reasoning

Pete, I think you misunderstand what I was trying to say.

I'm trying to say that I buy cars for a bit of fun, not for the MPG figures... although I'm nowhere near BMW's figures lets just say I don't hand around!!!

I suppose I could drive at 55 all the way and get somewhere near those figures but I have the M6 toll right on my doorstep

In my 35d I have averaged 27.2 MPG since delivery over 3k miles for 30 mile trips.

Most recent tank was 29 MPG.

I do much better in Eco mode ... I think I have a lead foot.

Motorway MPG

I got bored on the motorway so tested the fuel economy at various constant speeds. All using cruise control so I could improve on all of these figures slightly by driving more efficiently over hills.

Even small hills make a huge difference (more noticeable than in previous cars, maybe because of the extra weight) so you need a longer distance to avoid getting a reading unfairly influenced by hills.

Couldn't do 60mph as I was worried about creating a hazard and my 90mph kept getting cut short so it's not as accurate. 70mph test was over at least 20 minutes and 80mph about 15 mins

70mph 45.2mpg 37.7mpUSg (113km/h 6.2l/100km)
80mph 39.0mpg 32.6mpUSg (129km/h 7.2l/100km)
90mph 34.0mpg 28.3mpUSg (145km/h 8.3l/100km)

I have run flats and staggered wheels so probably the least efficient combination. Tyre pressure at about +0.1/0.2 bar over recommended. BP Ultimate diesel in the tank.

My record average over about an 80 mile motorway run remains 52mpg (59mph average in heavy traffic) but that was driving like Miss Daisy and watching the mpg like a hawk

Might try and repeat this with different diesel but not the most scientific of tests!

Thanks for effort sfax - I think it makes interesting reading. Irrepective of the absolute accuracy of your numbers, what it does show very clearly is the impact of speed on fuel economy. I really thought the numbers would be closer together. Thanks again.
