Is there a year range that has this problem and/or a year range where they fixed the issue? Is replacing the thrust piece alone sufficient to solve most of the problem? I have the occasional clunk, not sure if its this or not.

Do you feel the steering is a bit heavy after replacing it?

If it's heavy then you have tighten it too much. Try turning it back a quarter and see how that feels
