Possible radiator cooling fan issue.

Since last couple of days I have noticed that my X3 (2016) is heating up to 100 (based on the temp gauge on dashboard) even after driving short distances like 10-15 miles and at speeds up-to 40mph

I tested the radiator Fan When stationary. The radiator fan comes on when I switch on the AC. Weirdly, after switching the AC off but leaving the internal FANS on also keeps the radiator Fan on.
However, it wouldn't switch on, on its own even when temperature gauge on the dash was showing 100.

What could be wrong here? How can I trouble shoot this. Is it safe to drive at motorway speeds (70mph).

BTW, I have a copy of ISTA software - if that is required for any testing

Hi i am pretty sure you will have the same gauge as mine which points to the twelve o clock position when fully warmed up, i think thats " 100 " if so then its normal!

I'm a bit confused, what gauge are you looking at? Is it the one in my pic or are you looking at a readout and not a gauge? (mine is a diff year than yours so the gauge may look a little different). This is the oil temp gauge, there is no water temp gauge.

I believe that gauge indicates oil temperature. If so 100 is ideal.

Got it. Mine looks different from yours but it has the same symbol as yours.

Ok, so the question is.....are you talking about oil or water temp in your original post?

After looking the pics above I believe I was at mistake to assume the gauge shows temperature of the coolant for the engine.

I only started looking the temperature after I noticed that the car feels too hot for such short journeys. May be I am just being paranoid.

He said water. Probably didn't realize it was oil temperature. 100 is ideal.

Must be C in his case, my F gauge starts at 160. 212 is right about where mine normally sits which would match up to 100C.

Don't know if you are just being paranoid as no one can tell what "too hot" means but if your car is not throwing any dash idiot lights or display warnings and you don't see or smell radiator fluid in or under your engine bay, you are probably ok. Just check to be sure you have enough fluid in your expansion tank.

Probably depends on your engine... the N55 has the following characteristics as an example with 120C as the 12-O-clock reading. I assume your engine is different since you have a different gauge.

• 108°C/226°F = Economy mode
• 104°C/219°F = Normal mode
• 95°C/203°F = High mode
• 90°C/194°F = High mode and control with characteristic map thermostat

My waterpump went a year ago and I got an engine overheat warning around 120C.

You can monitor coolant temp through a hidden menu in the cluster. Some googling will show you how to access it.

Look up the normal operating temp of your engine and you'll learn if you have an issue or not.
