keys do not work after ECU Emmissions Update
Keys do not function after Emission update. Dealer states it is caused by after market key. the original key also does not function. Can start vehicle by placing key by steering column. Dealer want to replace (as they state "as a start") the CAS unit at my cost of $4,400+. everything worked fine prior to going into shop. They also had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. Needless to say I am a bit angry.

They could have a case on the aftermarket key but first they need to make the original BMW key work. Not sure how this is your issue. They'll say the issue is unrelated to the ECM update and won't believe you that there was not a problem before you came in.
Just another example of why I am not doing the recall on a 9 year old car; it will bring up issues like this on a vehicle that isn't worth a 4400 repair. |

I would have thrown a tantrum to be honest, how the fuck are they not liable for this issue? did you sign anything in the lines of "we (the bmw dealer) are not responsible for any fried module during the firmware update etc etc"? if not, I would threaten to sue.
