Golf tee mod really do anything

I did the mod by unclipping the connection in the trunk and I really cant hear any difference at all. I did notice the right tail pipe getting black. Is it that minor or is this not working?

If it is working, both tailpipes should be getting a bit black instead of just one. On my 08 335i it worked, but on my 2011 X5, they changed how it worked so that unplugging would keep the valve closed all the time instead of open all the time like my 335.

Wondering if the X3 is the same as the X5 or the 335 - best to just start it and hold your hand behind each tailpipe and see if you get flow out of both - if the valve is open, they both should flow evenly at low RPM like idle, at higher RPM it should be open either way.

I have a 14 so I will check that tonight. If its not working, I have to do it the original way with the vac lines correct?

The easiest way to do this is to unclip the little compartment on the inside left of the tailgate and you'll see a bunch of wires and such for the amp, etc. There's a little solenoid valve that you can unplug and just leave unplugged, and this will leave the flap open all the time. When you get sick of it, it's super simple to just plug it back in and the flap goes back to normal. Doesn't throw any codes or cause any problems, and the exhaust does definitely get a bit louder.

If you go the vac line route, it may default to closed also - that is what my X5 did, so you had to zip tie the actuator arm to keep it open.

The older cars used to use vacuum to hold it close, now they use vacuum to hold the flap open, so thinking that anyway you do it, it may just be closed and you will have to take a zip tie and put it around the external actuator arm and prop it open. That is how the X5 has been for the last 3 years.

Re: the zip tie method - does the muffler not melt the zip tie? I thought it would get too hot.

It didn't on my X5, seems it is var enough away on the actuator arm not to get that hot, but sounds like the plug inside is the better way to do it these days!

There is only one. Pull down the piece with the net on the driver side near the tailgate and really the only thing in there is a clip that has a vac line attached. Just push the metal retaining clip and unplug.

Sorry I know I must be dense...but
I see the 2 rubber vac lines connected...what exactly should i disconnect? The tubes? there is a metal clip but it seems attached to something above the vac lines with 2 other electrical wires running up and away. Can someone please make this crystal clear for me.

Remember, this does throw a shadow code when the dealer checks it.

I've taken mine to the dealer quite a few times with it unclipped, never heard about it and it's still unplugged. Don't think it's a big deal.

Nope. Once there's a code, it is stored.

Especially if the flaps inside becomes permanently open.
