New X3 water leaking problem? need help.

Hi all, I am new owners for 2011 X3 35i since Feb 2011, this my my first BMW. I love my car, but only one thing really bothers me a lot. Every time snow, rain or car wash, there is water leak into the trunk area, as my pic shows below ( by cell phone, not so good , sorry), you can see waster drop and water marks. My question is: Is any one else had same problem or just me not lucky enough? Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I suggest you take it back to the dealer pronto, show them the pix and get the leak resolved ASAP. It is fixable.

yeah take it back to the dealer! One thing that I have always loved about BMW was their service departments (at least the ones I went to), never any hassle, something wrong, they fix it and no charge, ever (for new cars), compared to my experience with Land Rover (who try to charge you for anything they can even when under warranty and with a maintance plan).

Hopefully BMW dealers all over NA (or the world) are the same with hassle free service departments. Remember BMW pays them to fix your car even though its free to you, they don't opporate just on new car sales profits, in fact this is why a lot of their dealers will sell cars for invoice, hoping to have you service it there (which is where they make the real money)

I'd be curious where that water is coming from. It's so far back from the pan-roof, that it looks like it might be coming through the headliner (via the pan-roof)!?...wow!

Let us know what they find.

I'm going to wager a guess. I think that the water dripped in from the top of the tailgate when you opened it. Was the water there right when you opened it up?

I have noticed this in my current car, immediately after the wash when I open the tailgate water drips inside cargo area, if the wind is bad it pushes more water inside, but if you are sure that is not the reason then you should take it to the dealer immediately.

Ahhh...that's a possibility MA78....hadn't occured to me. It seems so far back from the pan-roof, that it would seem impossible for the water to find itself so far back from that glass roof.

And I would hazzard a guess that if it was coming through the headliner, the OP surely would've noticed that.

to the original poster :

I had the same problem, once, with my X3.
The car was parked with a slight upward angle, with a lot of rain... When I opened the tailgate, there was a little bit of water on the trunk protector, and I'm sure that it did not drop onto it while the tailgate opened...
Never happened again, though. I don't park my car outdoors often...

I'll follow this thread for sure !

Definitely not right. My '09 doesn't do that under any circumstances. Water running off the open hatch should run into the top channel and down around the sides. Possibility of poorly sealed back window at the top. Dealer should fix it no problem.

Yes, you are right, the water drops come after I open the gate, but the water marks are old. If you have the same issue, is that means it is normal?

I only park my car outside because the company only has outdoor parking, and weather in Canada is bad, we even got some snow yesterday....

Thanks for all advices, just send pics to dealer, been told take car to them some times this week and they will check for me, and they told me some water can get in, but shouldn't be that much like water mark shows. Thanks every one, I will post result after dealer checked for me.

Sent car to dealer last week and here is what I got:

First I been told: my car was tested under shower for hour, not leak found, if I open the trunk after rain ,snow or car wash then water gets into cargo area is not their problem..., kind disappointing.

Then they fix a loosing rear bumper problem, but after that I can hear metal squawking noise every time go over bumpy road...(I don't even know where the noise comes from, one more thing on the list needs to be check next time.)

The last problem is loud wind noise from drive side after 110 km/h (most time I drive around 110km/h-120km/h), so I ask them to check, and they told me they will not test drive any car over 100 km/h... (are you kidding me? the speedometer shows over 200km/h! why don't BMW just set it to 100km/h max?) , so I am still living with my wind noise every day.(the wind noise just like your car window is not fully closed, not noise outside your car.)

As first time Canadian BMW buyer, this is really a disappointed experience with BMW Canada, flees like I been screwed up twice -- first is the high price and leak option then the bad services. BTW: I also called BMW them told me go to other dealer to check again, hopefully I can got my car fixed.

I don't think the water getting in the cargo area when you open the hatch is BMWs problem. That happens on other makes as well, and I have had it happen to me with other vehicles. It doesn't sound like it leaks when the hatch is closed.

As to the wind noise, I see you are posting on the separate thread for noise, so will leave that issue alone on this thread.

It is normal to have drops of water in the trunk of these hatch backs. This happens in my GTI as well. Just use some vinyl and rubber protectant on the cover. http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows....jsp?locale=en. Have the dealer adjust the window to see if that helps with the wind noise.
