You definitely need to get your car's interiors detailed but you can try the following :
Keep half cup of freshly ground coffee and half cup of baking soda in another cup in the car. Leave overnight. You might get relief the next day. |

When you smoke in any car it is very important to turn OFF the recirculating function. In the X3 there is 3 options you have to toggle through. You want it set to where there is no green LED light on in the button.
If you've been smoking for a while with the re-circ setting on or in auto you'll probably want to change out your cabin filter as it's been marinating in the smokey smell. |

I once purchased a previously enjoyed smokers car and can say that it was impossible to get rid of the stale smokey smell in the car.
Being a smoker you may not notice the smell too much after changing the cabin filter and such but nonsmokers will always notice the smell. Being a smokers car will hurt resale... I don't know if there are any restrictions on leased vehicles but it wouldn't surprise me... |

Let's see now. You just sprayed something on a filter that is made to stick to another material causing the filter to be possibly clog, increasing the surface area for more smoke partials and oils to attach to, and slowing down the air flow thru the filter. In the long run, probably defeating what you set out to do. Are you sure it's just cigarettes you're smoking. |

Lol. Its somehow ironic to see smokers complaining about the residual smell in their cars.

Spraying car wax into the air filter? That's acceptable? You'll clog it and you're just covering up an odor with another, not eliminating the problem.
I'm a smoker but don't smoke in my X3. However, I did in my prior vehicles, and they didn't smell like smoke. I would hold the cigarette in my left hand, next to the cracked driver's side window to allow the smoke to be drawn out as the car moved. It's best to keep only that window cracked a couple inches and all others closed. At stoplights, I'd hold the cigarette outside the car. I'd always exhale directly out the window. While smoking I wouldn't run the air, especially on recirculate, to keep the filters clean. Don't use the ash tray. And I'd always drive for a good distance with the windows open before getting out. It works. |

I wasn't going to jump on that one too. When I'm on my motorcycle there is nothing worse than the guy in front of me flipping the burning butt out the window like a flaming june bug.

I would really like to know why smokers think it's ok to flick the butt out the window. It's litter plain and simple. Even worse are the little ash tray piles in the parking lots. Really pisses me off - then there is the lit butt coming at me while on the motorcycle...I've kicked doors for that one
Also my understanding is that the smoke eventually coats all the electric connectors in the car creating all sorts of expensive, non warranty issues. I will never buy a car with even a hint of prior smoke. |

If you are an audiophile (I know, sounds inappropriate), you'll want to stay clear of smoke filled homes for preowned audio gear as well..likely the same type of issue.
