Thumbs up Two BMW Turbo Diesel Engines Coming to US - 180HP 2.0L 4-Cyl and 255HP 3.0L 6-Cyl

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW Announces 2.0L 4 cylinder and 3.0L 6 Cylinder Turbo Disesel Engines for US

COMMENTS

BMW has confirmed that two diesel engines will be making their way to the US.

One is a 2.0L single-turbo twinscroll 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine outputting 180 HP and 280 LB-FT torque, which is identical stats to the N47 engine which currently powers the F30 320d and F10 520. As for consumption and performance, the 320d, for example, achieves an impressive 52.2 combined MPG (US) (40.5 city / 61.8 hwy), with a factory claimed 7.1 secs 0-60 mph.

The other is a 3.0L twinscroll 6 cylinder turbo diesel outputting 255 HP (no official torque number yet, but expect 400+ lb-ft torque). This will be an all new engine never seen before in any model.

These engines will be paired with 8 speed automatics and make use of SCR technology (urea based "selective catalyst reduction") to meet the stringent US diesel emission standards.

BMW has not yet confirmed which models will receive these engines (nor when), but the 4-cylinder may see duty in a future 220d, 320d, 520d (or perhaps labeled for the NA market as 225d, 325d, 525d), while the 6-cylinder will power models labeled 25d, 30d, or 35d, as well as their counterparts in the xDrive models. No matter the nomenclature, this is wonderful news for the BMW's NA customers!

The F30 3 Series lineup will likely be the first models to use the new engines.

I'm intriged about this new 3.0l tiwn-scroll diesel. The quoted power and possible torque numbers (225 hp ; 400+ lb-ft) are fairly much the same as the existing 30d engine used in the F25 X3 (190 kW ; 560 Nm). So is this a totally new engine, or simply the first application of the 30d engine in the US market?

OMG, that engine would be awesome in an X3. I know, I know, it is already available in Europe but not in the US. I pick up my 2013 X28i in five days. Had a 2.0l diesel option been available (presumably providing combined mpg in the low 40s in X3 guise), I would have bought that. Kudos to BMW for finally doing this.

Now I'm confused. Actually read the article referenced in the original post and it says the new 3.0l diesel I6 is a twin-turbocharged engine, not a twin scroll. But it then goes on to say its not the same twin-turbo diesel as the 35d engine available in Europe. But the power and torque numbers match the single turbo 30d engine?

The 30d in Europe is not a single turbo. It's a delightfull twinturbo with lots of fun

Well thats news to me. The 30d engine in my F25 X3 has only a single turbo - maybe its different in Europe but I doubt it. Its the 35d engine that has the twin turbochargers.

Back to my original comment - I'm very pleased for our NA friends that they finally will be getting a wider range of diesels in their market but I think both these diesel engines are simply new to the NA market rather than being new engines to BMW worldwide.

No Richardbr, we have two - the single (twin scroll) turbo 3.0l engine badged 3.0d and the twin turbo 3.0l engine badged as 3.5d

The latter is currently top of the range, search the forum. Primary benefit is reduced turbo lag as the one turbo has its max impact at low revs, the other at high revs, not the "twin scroll" compromise in the regular 3.0d. I drive this, and it doesn't feel compromised, but the guys who have driven both certainly report it.
