How to replace the cord on Fuel Cap (Diesel)?

I managed to snap the plastic/rubber cord that holds the fuel cap to the car. I have a replacement and its easy to see where it fits onto the flap door, but I have no idea how seperate the fuel flap so I can attach it?

Any advise there appreciated.

If you purchased the correct replacement fuel filler cap…the tether should already be attached to the fuel cap (I believe it is permanently attached to the cap)…and you just slide the unattached end into the location on the car.

Just guessing since you didn’t post a pic nor revealed the part number you purchased to fix the issue.

When I look up they fuel filler cap for a X3 35d…it says BMW part # 16-11-7-468-994
