Just installed
-Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV 225/60R17 99 R Flat Run ($800)
-A set of 7.5x17 ET32 BMW P/N 36116796242 wheels from a 3 series sedan from my local craigslist ($350)
-And some tire pressure monitors from a guy on eBay from Slovakia. ($120)

Looks a little small but tire height is the same as my summer 245/46R19 stock tires

These pulled me up a hill that I could barely walk on. Its going to be a good winter.

Yes. Using the run flats.

Long, steep, curvy hill to climb to get from the lake house to the county road and the Nokians handled it as well as the Blizzaks did on my former Audi. Like I wrote in my original post, it was so slick that there was one section where I had a hard time walking up the hill.

Had summer tires on mine. Just bought Michlein snow tires. It's winter! You need every advantage you can get if you drive in snow.

Getting non RFT Michellin X-Ice XI3 put on tomorrow. Have had Nokian RFT R2 on for the last 4 seasons so I am wondering how these Michellin's will be in the deeper snow and on mountain roads.

Wow they look great for winter, surprised 17’s fit 35i brakes too. Always wondered what those wheels would look like on a F25. 👍🏼

Got Michellin X-Ice put on yesterday. I'm impressed with how these drive and handle on dry pavement. I've driven up to 80-85 and they are certainly quieter than I expected. Now the big test is how they handle in the snowy conditions. They are my first non-runflat on my X3 and also give a much smoother ride.

Super surprised at how quiet the Nokians are too.
Of course the real test is in 10,000 miles when many tires start getting noisier.

Most of the snow has melted due to the warmer weather (and my installing the Yakima rack), so patiently waiting to do more field testing.

Yeah, I did all the calculations with the various online tire size and wheel offset calculators but was still crossing my fingers until I test fit them and drove around the neighborhood with some lower profile 3 series runflats right after I bought them.

Plenty of room for the suspension, brake disks and calipers.
The slightly higher profile of the tires also gives a cushier ride over poor roads.

My area (Erie PA) just experienced a record 50 plus inches over two days. While I am believer in the X3's AWD, many here in the snow belt have a set of winter tires nevertheless. Mine are 225/60-17 General Altimax Arctics on 7.5 x 17 inch X5 wheels. While not an expensive tire (like Michelin or Norkia), the vehicle easily managed 18" of snow without issue. In fact, it was great fun blasting around empty roads. In short, the X3 is a wonderful vehicle in snow with winter tires.

I just completed a 2400 mile road trip from Mass to Utah. I went thru icy roads, pouring rain and snow covered roads. I had just put on new Michellin X-Ice and I am impressed with these tires. They handled all the road conditions very sure-footed and were quiet and smooth. They are non-runflat and I definitely felt the ride improvement over the standard run flats. I had those tires up to 80-90 mph sustained and still quiet and smooth. I'm still waiting to find out how they do in deep snow conditions.

cadman50, I too really like the Michelin X-ice. With the 2 to 3 in. snow we got the other day they gripped through the snow like dry pavement. Can't wait to see how they are in 6 in. or more snow. They drive so much better than the summer run flats I had on the car on dry pavement. I'll need to put the summer tires on in the spring cause there is no sense wasting winter tires on dry pavement. But I don't think I'd ever buy run flat tires after I can see the difference.

You did your homework. I have hakka R2 18", lots of fun.
Problem is Nokian make limited sizes and even more limited RFT.

Made a mistake, they were $110 not $120
He sells a couple of different sensors for F25s. Before ordering, message the guy with your year, model and VIN and he will make sure you get the correct sensors.
Delivery took a week - maybe less? I just remember it being really fast.

Hello
Just a few pics to show everyone what real snow looks like. I have about 18-20 inches on the flat and level. Snow plow has it piled 4-5 feet high. Figs 1 & 2 show this.

I just have Citurato P7 all seasons RFT on(24K Mi on the clock). Tires that came with it. Perhaps with the low end torque of the X3d along with X drive it works. I have gone thru 8 inches of snow with no issues. When it gets up to 8-12 inches, then it has trouble.

Fig 3 shows why I live up here. Views, Views Views, clear dark skies. Being an astronomer, I have an observatory up here. 1.3 million acres of White Mountain National Forest to my North.
