Compared to a Q5 the standard door trims are higher spec. I viewed and drove the Q5 before committing to the X3. Leather upper half door trims on the Q5 are extra $

So this thread made me check out the door panels on my C63 and LR2. The C63 (2009) has a felt liner on the inside and outside of it which is pretty nice looking and easy to clean, wish BMW went this route as its not expensive and looks nicer. Our LR2 (which stickered at $41,000 loaded) has smooth plastic there but it actually looks nicer for some reason (but probably cheaper), and that part of the door does take abuse, especially in a SUV. I bet they change it in 2014 for the "refresh". Or maybe a X3M with full leather will work, probably only cost $20K more than a loaded X3 35i

vs Audi Q5

someone I work with just picked up their Deep Sea Blue (yeah same name as BMW's color) Audi Q5, 2.0. I was looking at the doors and have to say they were worse looking than the X3, so I guess there isn't much to complain about, if you want nicer things go to the next size SUV...

Surely you can see that protective cover (cardboard?) is not part of the car...can't tell if you are joking.

I'm okay with it. Durable where junk is more pokey to get and is most often out of view. Wouldn't mind if it were lined to combat rattling of stuff.

I agree, durability where it counts. Personally I wouldn't mind scuffing hard plastic but would if it was covered in nice leather. Although it would be nice if BMW covered the plastic bins with the same material as the headliner, my previous car did that and it was surprisingly easy to clean for a black cloth that had frequent contact with shoes.

I agree the lower door panels were an area of slight disappointment. The rest of the interior is quite an upgrade from the previous gen though.

Yes, but high heels dont scuff as much as workboots when they are pressed against the headliner.
