Auto rear tailgate, DAO or problem

My 2015 has the auto rear tailgate, which seems easy enough to use in theory. But for the life of me I can virtually never get it to work. I've tried practicing where to place my foot but even then seldom get it to work.

Yesterday I had an actual real life use for the auto tailgate, my arms full carrying a beverage case, so I carefully placed my foot under the car and waited and no joy.

What the heck am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

BTW, DAO is Dumb Ass Operator

I havent got it but was under the assumption it was only operated from the keyfob or button inside bootlid. And The foot activation you refer to was only with the optional comfort access package:

My X3 doesn't have it, but I've used that feature on an M5. A straight in and out kick in the center of the rear bumper would open the trunk.

AIUI, you do need the comfort access option but, if you've got an MSport, even with comfort access you won't get the foot-waving activation of the tailgate as the sensor is incompatible with the MSport rear bumper

I do have the comfort access package. I've been able to get the auto liftgate to close using my foot a couple times but only been able to get it to open once. The process to get making it work repeatedly seems to elude me.

The way I can make mine work is to kick my foot in the middle quickly. If it is too slow it does not work. Also it is usually dead center of the back.

I agree. that is the only way i have been able to make mine work. it doesn't work every time though. i remember watching a tele-ad showing it open with a dog's wagging its tail. That was misleading.

Here are some images showing the toe kick sensor rods and sensor module on the interior of the bumper facia, from my trailer hitch installation.

The rods are over 2' long, centered on the facia.

At least bring to the dealer and ask them to show you how to do it properly. From my experience, it has to be done in the perfect place at the perfect speed. I have it working 95% of the time.
