Towing electrics
I'm looking for the part number of the wiring loom which will supply power to auxiliary power circuits on euro 13 pin towing systems. My MY2012 F25 came with a useless trailer pack that just powers lights, I need auxiliary power for my trailer control system connected to my caravan.
Hoping someone can offer some help.

Ok, it's looking like none of you have experienced this problem! I think that the issue could be resolved by connecting a 20A fused supply cable directly from the battery to pin 9 (permanent supply) and an earth to pin 11 on a new 13 pin trailer socket. The only problem is this would require battery disconnection and I'm unsure if connecting a cable from the battery would be recognised as a fault error on the computer diagnostic system.

Had the same problem with my new BMW X3. It has integrated tow bar but with only a subset of pins connected on the 13 pin connector.
Complained and the dealer rectified at no additional charge. Apologies not sure what was added but importantly it does not mess with the on board computer or Canbus system. I have had this problem with self fitted tow bar electrics on previous cars. The X3 integrated tow bar works very well as does the electrics. |

The main power distribution is adjacent to the trailer hitch and trailer wiring.
On my 2015 there are unused power taps that could be populated and utilized for this power feed. The access to this area is very easy on my vehicle, by removing two screws and four quick ¼ turn fasteners. |

Thanks for the replies folks, all I can say is if any of you intend towing a modern Caravan and order the factory fit electric towbar using a 13 pin euro socket you better make it absolutely clear that you need power to pins 9 and 10 as well as earths on pins 11 and 13. Dealerships here in Scotland have no idea of what is required and essentially my X3 is not fit for purpose when connected to my caravan. I'm now contacting independant towbar installation specialists to see if they can provide power, I am concerned that this could invalidate the warranty though. The system should conform to ISO 11446, clearly the factory fit option does not.

The typical US vehicle connector is the ISO 1724 7-pin connector, as shown here. Get a wiring diagram for your vehicle and implement proper electrical connections, to not affect existing wiring and to not cause problems from the new wiring. |

There is also a screw for ground nearby that could be used for pins 11 and 13. |

The US pin looks entirely different from the Euro socket which has round pins, the towing assembly is supplied from Wesfalia.
The dealership have just informed me that they have located the necessary parts and that they can fit them at the discounted price of £375. Letter written to BMW UK highlighting my dissatisfaction, why supply towing equipment which is essentially not fit for purpose? More importantly why are the omitted pins not clearly stated at the point of sale?

It looks like the required part is the Westfalia 300 025 300 113, as-shown in page 387 of 422 of this Westfalia Towing 2013 Catalogue.
The £375 discounted price seems high, but that includes labor. There are eBay auctions selling just the part for 25 EUR. |
