Take a velar for a test drive and make sure it is optioned up like how you are planning to purchase because options transform the car.

Planning to test, my budget is tight so lightly optioned it as attached to have a few as possible electronics reducing chances of something going wrong hopefully.

If your max is 65k, I wouldn't go for the Velar. The problem is that unless you upgrade the Velar to about 75k, the velar is not as nice as BMW because there is no leather on the dash and you only get 10 way seats and no lumbar support. If I was going to spend 65k I would tell you to get the X3 M40i.

That's what am thinking and feel I will have a bigger smile on my face with the M40i engine and handling...we will see once I test drive the Velar. Would be nice to get your take and review on your Velar vs X3.

Aside from the money, there is zero comparison between the Velar and X3 M40. The Range Rover will be more luxurious, roomier feeling inside, and better riding, whereas the BMW will be more dynamic on road. Had the last generation X3, and regret turning it in at lease end. Should have kept it as my winter beater. Have had lots of BMWs but they are NOT perfectly reliable. Lots of trips to dealer for dead battery, warning lights, sensors, traction control/transmission issues. I always load my cars up to make them as luxurious as possible, but the new Velar, even with the non-leather dash is head and shoulders more luxurious inside. Not a huge fan of any overly complicated touch screen controls, but the way of the future, unless you get an Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio when it launches or F Pace S. If comparing loaded for loaded, the Alfa will be the most dynamic on road based on the core platform. It’s just that good and most driver focused. Probably not much of an off roader though.

Everything I have read and watched, the Velar is not that roomy in the back and the ride quality not that smooth and crashes over potholes, need to check it out for myself. If the M40i is as luxurious as the 5 series the gap will be effectively small. Remember the Velar has some scratchy cheap plastics which is unfortunate for its price tag.

It is perfectly roomy in the back but marginally less than the X3. It does however have a bigger boot with an additional 120 more litres. 550 litres for the BMW X3 and 673 for the Velar. If you are reading the reviews that is completely false especially for the air suspension. That might be the case for the non-air suspension vehicles. Yes you can get some scratchy cheap plastics at the lower tier Velars but once you option certain items like leather covered dash and the full extended leather package the only cheap plastic is the door bins but it honestly it doesn't feel cheap just rock solid plastic that can withstand you scuffing it without damaging it.

If I had 65k it would be going on an AMG GLC 63. I need a V8 before they get banned

I drove one and I can say firsthand that it actually rides very well if you get the better suspension and the interior is not cheap plastic at all. Not sure where you heard that comment. It is definitely more luxurious than the X3, said as an owner for 3 years. The backseat is also roomier. It is a very nice vehicle.

Bottom door panels, center console some finicky plastics and boot lip..check reviews I posted. To get air suspension which I feel is a liability you must spend much more than $65k.

Will reconfirm when I check it out.

Having just picked up a new RR Velar all I can say it is an amazing car. Having come from a fully loaded 2013 BMW X3 28i and loving it for every single mile for the 4.5 years I owned it, The Velar is so much more luxurious but of course you really need to load it up. At the end of the day, both cars the velar and the new x3 are both amazing choices and you will not go wrong with either one.

Test drove the Velar

I finally got to drive the new Velar full spec Supercharger model.

My initial thoughts
1) The car is stunning in and out
2) Ride comfort better than my X4
3) The Super charged engine didn’t feel as fast as the numbers, expected more, left underwhelmed no excitement for me.
4) Even though it’s sporty than most Range Rover, handling not as tight as my X4 with sports suspension a bit floaty.
5) Rear sitting is tighter than my X4, I didn’t understand why they did this yet the trunk is massive. It’s claustrophobic too in the rear, think it’s the black headliner and small windows.
6) Front cabin not as spacious as photos and videos suggest, am 6’3, the front console restricted my leg movement and leg rest position.
7) The new infortaiment looks sleek, on the go use is a pain, it will take time to master where is what. Idrive so much better.
8) Material quality slightly better than my X4 not by the margin I was expecting, still some cheap hard plastics in the car.
9) Alcantara steering wheel is not for me, felts like my hands were on a towel, not my thing.
10) Car is very quiet, you cannot hear the exhaust, shame with such an engine.
11) Most disappointing thing were the seats. I just don’t get it, these were the top spec seats with massage, heat and ventilation and felt hard like bricks, they were uncomfortable.(Maybe Massage system the issue, I don’t know)

In all I think I came with very high expectations, but it’s still an amazing Vehicle to get similar spec on a BMW X3 would be a $20-30k premium.

Will I buy it? Depends how my test of the X3M40i goes, but would take it over the Macan handling aside.

From car and driver tests when they pitched the Velar vs the rest. (Charts in the review) The M40i looks promising and c&d review mirrors my experience.
