That's strange. It's supposed to be C for 2012 (as was mentioned).

What does this VIN decoder site say if you copy/paste your VIN in? It's a Ford site but the decoder appears to understand all VINs and even knows that "L" is Spartanburg. I couldn't find any 2012 X3 VINs to plug in (dealers don't appear to have stock yet), but I found a 2012 X5 (with C in position 10) and it decoded just fine. You sure you're looking at the right digit? The one just before the "L"?

5UXWX7C53BL733472 (2011 X3)
5UXZV4C50CL750734 (2012 X5)

Output for the X3 (formatted as a table on the site, but that doesn't copy well to here):

The great thing about standards is there are so many to choose from. Turns out that either Europe doesn't follow ISO 3997 or it's more flexible than I thought. I'm not going to pay 50 Swiss Francs to get a copy of the standard to find out.

Anyway, here's a decoder for European Fords: http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/vindecoder.html. More importantly, there's a breakdown of the Euro VIN, which is different from the US one. Position 11 is the year and 12 is the month. There's a table at that link that explains the complex coding of those, but unfortunately it only goes through 2005.

Mine went into production on Monday, and is still in production today (Thursday). CA told me a week to build, a week to get here. That sound accurate? Got a buyer for my wife's 4runner already.

so the last 6 digits are a sequential production #? mine is 735138 built somewhere around first week sept.

Also whats the 9th digit for? I have a 1 - nothing listed in your helpful key on that digit.

9th digit is a sort of checksum calculated from the rest of the VIN. It's helpful for detecting typos. Similar to what they do for credit cards. If you change any position (including that one) and feed it to the Ford decoder, it'll tell you to get real and enter a valid VIN.

It does seem unlikely that 2011 would be L, but we really don't know because our chart ends at 2005 (I found one for 2007, but that's still not helpful). Maybe your CA can help you. I couldn't find a decent UK/Euro VIN decoder.

Does that mean it's mostly complete or is it stock footage? This came 1-2 weeks earlier than I expected. Status is still, "in production".
The only parts of the build video that have your car, are where the VIN pops up in a bar on the bottom of the video. It should happen in 6 spots (moon roof; windshield; tilt; "marriage"; touch down; drive off. On mine, the last part, (the best part) it said "live camera temporarily unavailable."

Mine is finished as of 3 days ago. We will have it on Monday (the 10th).

Too bad above the video, dog. Congrats on the delivery, though!

I ordered x28i on 9/26. Just got email from dealer. Production was started at 12:07 yesterday, October 7. Your VIN is 5UXWX5C54CLXXXXXX.

Last seven digit of VIN are different from production number initially received!!!

Hopefully I should get it by Nov first week.

so whats the deal - if you live out west they ship the X3 by railroad, but in the east by truck? Also someone in Toronto mentioned a train. obviously if you don't live in US or Canada - on a boat, port of Charleston it is....

Once production finished on my X, (which takes 5 working days), it was released to the carrier the next day and arrived in Michigan the following day (released to carrier July 1st, delivered to the dealer on July 2nd). You should have it in no time at all!
