New Owner / Brakes Question

Posted this in the X4 Thread, and thought fellow X3 owners might give some more insight!

Just purchased a CPO 2015 X4 recently, with 9K miles!

MSRP well optioned was 60K, Got a deal for 45K - Took the plunge and enjoying every moment of it.

Anyways, I'm hearing a strange grinding noise during hard braking- sounds like it's coming from the transmission or the front wheels- it varies. Tires have good tread, brakepads are still good. Normal braking is fine with no noises, but I have to say they feel very soft- as in I have to press down pretty far to get good braking power. I did a search and found out this is pretty common with the X3's, X4's though.

Anyways the grinding sound from the Xdrive system? Maybe the ABS?

First BMW and first AWD car, so will appreciate any input!

niived, I don't dare to show my car again in the X4 forum

No problems whatsoever with brakes: good brakepedal feel and enough power to activate ABS.

I can recommend two improvents to your vehicle: H&R springs and M Performance Klappenshalldämpfer (two valves for legal and illegal operation).

Nice pics - here is my car.

tjalle, thanks for the input. After a few more days and couple more tests, it does seem like the ABS is kicking in during the hard braking, but I'm not sure if it should be activating under these circumstances.

Completely dry roads, Pirelli P-zero (factory) tires, 80-90% brake from 40mph. Is it normal for ABS to kick in? The grinding sound is a little quieter if I'm braking at 70-80%, but still there.

It's weird because all my past cars with ABS did not have this harsh of a sound even with 100% braking in actual emergency situations.

I am going to the dealer tomorrow to have it checked, but I don't trust dealers and don't want to be fed their BS- would like to have more members' knowledge and experience.

ABS kicks in when wheels tend to lock up. Very probably OK.

Grinding sound mostly in connection with worn out pads - or stone caught in the caliper.

Interested in what the brake compound is on the car.
