The elusive front left clunkclunk
Good news. Just received word from Perillo about the steering/suspension clunk that has been torturing me since last February. Apparently it's fixed. They replaced the steering rack which I thought they had done last time, but admitted to lying about that. The sound should be gone when I pick it up after the paintwork is finished on the huge key mark all along the right side of my car. Should be about a week.

Key mark? You live in Chicago right?
That town did more damage to my last car (in one weekend) than the whole 8 years of my ownership north of the border. People there must really hate clean cars or something. |

However, I do notice clunk when driving on a big pot hole or over a curb with wheels turned significantly. Wheels straight no noise at all. |

I am not aware of a recall, but mine had the same problem. After taking it to the dealer a couple of times - and being told it was normal - I reproduced the noise by turning the wheel to the right and going over small bumps. They replaced the steering rack and it fixed the problem. I still have issues with a noisy drivers door window when bringing it up or down and with a lag and lurch when putting the car in gear and accelerating from a stop. I have a 2011 X3 2.8. I am becoming pretty disappointed with the quality of the X3; its certainly not up to other BMW's I have owned.

A higher-than-normal problem rate is to be expected after a major re-design, particularly in the first year. And given how quickly we went from model-year 2011 to 2012 to 2013, I think we are all early-adopters. |

Perhaps my SA misspoke, as I did find BMW SB #337534, which states that it is for the front passenger window. However, on my North American X3, I like to keep my front-seat passenger on the right side, as they tend to get in the way of the steering wheel when sitting on the left. |

Do you happen to know which version of the software was used to correct the lurching and surging? I had the software reflashed last month because it lagged off a stop, but the lurching developed afterwards. Perhaps there has been another revision or I got an outdated version? It would be nice to know when these updates get released and some way of keeping track of what they fix (or mess up!) Does anyone have a way of tracking these? Thanks! |
