Really depends on what your climate is like to determine if it's worth doing.

I’m not far from you in RI. No body rust anywhere yet , very light surface rust on some of the suspension and rear springs. Rear shocks are looking very rusty.
I did notice an abundance of mud and debris packed inside the side skirt/rocker panel area. I actually completely removed front and rear wheel well liners and cleaned it all out. I would highly recommend doing this as that can definitely cause rust |

Yes usually, 10 years. Pretty sure it's only on painted body panels though... and it might be hard to cash in on. There's been plenty of claims rejected over the years across various manufacturers. It's really easy to deny due to say a rock chip that wasn't properly filled in or was left and caused the rust in the first place.

I am not going to rustproof my BMW. Looking under the thing I see that it is covered with aluminum and plastic shields. There is hardlly any place they could get at without removing the shields and I don't think that is going to happen. I did not realize that there was a warranty for rust.

The vehicle body is submerged several times prior to paint, one of them is in anti corrosion chemicals. If you spray the undercarriage well each spring with a power washer or strong hose to remove collected dirt and grit that retains moisture, I doubt you'll have any body rust for the usable life of the vehicle. If the paint is scratched down to bare metal, eventuality rust will form, so seal any exposed metal if scratched. Non-body parts are more susceptible to rust (think suspension parts and fasteners) but they're thick so generally don't rust out.
I spray QMAXX Salt, a Saltwater Corrosion Protection product on susceptible undercarriage parts periodically on all my vehicles. It has dramatically reduced rust on them. I hate working with rusted fasteners. |
