Hissing 3.0D - probably normal

I think I've seen comments on this elsewhere with other engines, maybe only with autos.

When accelerating hard, above the sound of the engine I get a sort of a hissing noise, is this induction noise or is it related to the auto box?

If it's not normal, let me know!

Probably the turbo you can hear as it spools up under load and starts pumping air. Should start about 1500rpm and will be loader with the window open on narrow roads when you get the echo from the walls.

If you haven't had a turbo car before it seems odd but you get used to it. Once you hear the hiss you should feel the thump in the back

I've had a number of petrol turbos, it's not that sort of whine type noise, I would like that sound. It's more hydraulic sounding. It's from 3,000 rpm with WOT. Maybe it's how a diesel turbo sounds.....any other 3.0D drivers care to comment?

Definitely heard from inside the car with the windows closed, mind you I have a door seal / wind noise problem still.....

30d owner here! Erm... I'm not sure. The whistle is audible above 1500rpm but as for 3000rpm WOT, I don't know. I'm usually enjoying it too much to notice!! The N57's do "hiss" and its more audible from the outside but I would appreciate if you could upload a video of your worry so I could look at it for further diagnosis. I'll get the other guys on the N57 board to take a look then too.

I'll see what I can do. It could be I'm hearing the hiss due to what may be duff door seals. The sound swamps the roar of the engine.

That sound is the turbos building boost when you step on it. I think it's kinda cool.

I'm more used to turbos whining and "singing". If the current generation hiss then that's ok. I sort of suspected this was a normal sound.

My Q5 does this. Very distinctive hiss, not quite an old school turbo boost sound but something else that is such a distinct frequency compared to the engine/road noise that it comes through clear as day. I'm not sure I like it but have learned to live with it.

The hiss swamps the roar of the engine? That doesn't sound normal :/. The diesel's do hiss like I said though... A video is definitely required!

Like my 335i you have small turbos, probably these behave differently. I have the service manager calling me about the other issues, I'll check on this hissing at the same time.

The 30d has only one twin scroll turbo which is used lower down the rev range - commencing at 1500rpm. I don't know when it "goes out".

I'm somewhat confused over some of the engine details. Do the 30D and 35D both use the N57 but with different turbo configs? Is the 30D a single or twin scroll?

For the 30D it seems like max torque is from 2000 to 2750 rpm, whereas the 35D it's 1500 to 2500:

Your 3.0 has "Twin Scroll" my 35D has "Twin Turbos" one large and one small. The small one runs low RPM and the large on "Takes over" @ High RPM.
We need to "Hear" what your engine is doing really.
Turbo wine/whistle might be the problem not sure though.
Twin Turbo's do not suffer that noise to my knowledge.

Hmm...I'm having trouble replicating the sound now. It does seem though like the sound starts once the main effect of the turbo is gone.

The sound seems to simply be the engine sounding a little rough (I'm used to a petrol 6). It's worse on Normal than Sport. I expect BMW may set the map / boost differently for these settings. The moral of this is to use Sport more.

The English language wiki on the engines is not up to date.

The 30d has the N57D30OL, 258PS @ 4000rpm, 560Nm @ 1500-3000rpm. A single, variable geometry turbo. 1800bar fuel injection pressure.

The 35d has the N57D30TOP, 313PS @ 4400rpm, 630Nm @ 1500-2500rpm. One small (varible geometry), one larger turbo (fixed geometry). 2000bar fuel injection pressure.

I was under the illusion that both the 30d and 35d had 2000bar pressure and the 25d had a drop to 1800bar. Are you sure you can trust Wiki? :P

NO not right, I test drove the 3.0 and it made no noises I could detect at all, only the dull engine noise, Get it looked at.

Dull noise? Ha! But yes, my 30d has made no noises out of sorts unless it had a problem. Are the other 3 things on your list X3 related?
