X2 - new kid on the block.

Today BMW presented a teaser at the Paris Motorshow - X2 in a "concept form".

I have seen spy pictures that indicated a "dull" sideview - the concept has a stunning sideview.

If production cars will be anything like it, there is a contender, for those who don't need all the space available in X3/X4.

FWD is a challenge and an opportunity. BMW has the e-AWD system (electric RWD) already in production. A vehicle with 230-300 bhp 4 pot front engine and 75 kW rear electric motor could be fun.

Acclaim and good news.

There is a general acclaim of the design - incl. from UK journalists, who put it as a serious contender to the Evoque - rarely heard of

Also, supposedly, there will be a 300bhp M variant. + e-AWD?

Car itself looks ok, but definitely not like a "BMW" (same goes for the X1).
Growing up, BMW's were one of three things.
"top performance coupe"
"more practical, prestigious performance sedan"
"big, brawny, luxury SUV"
All of which had a significant presence on the road.
The X1/X2... looks like just another volume selling compact SUV.
With that said, I drove the X1 while I had it as a loaner, and its VERY similar to the Mini Countryman, probably due to the FWD bias, UKL platform. Small, light, nimble, practical (to some), but overall it feels cheap. Too many plastics, car doesn't feel planted on the road, overall experience did not feel like a BMW. I don't expect the X2 to be much different.
I understand BMW is trying to get the younger generation into their brand, but if there are no BMW characteristics in these cars, what will make them staying loyal to BMW?

Agreed, it's just Terrible. BMW is selling it's soul like Audi & MB now. Churning out cheaper, low quality models, just so lower income people can say they drive a BMW. I see an Audi A3 Sedan, more than any other German car model on the streets today. But you have to admit, because of this, alot of the lower car company brands (Honda, Toyota, Suburu) have been stepping up their R&D, to give their top of the line models, more technology and standard features to bring those A3 Buyers or Leasers in.

It's about a fleet that when averaged out gets better gas mileage, thanks to government! Otherwise say goodbye to M cars!

I think you underestimate BMW - unless you are one of the Die Hards who just tolerate a manual inline NA six with RWD.

The X2 will probably have very similar front and rear to X1. Sideview will, hopefully, remain.

The Mini is developed in the UK by Ricardo (under BMW supervision), who happens to be one of the very best engineering firms, with vast experience of FWD and AWD.
They are also one the companies pioneering Torque Vectoring, to enhance handling AND developed/manufacturing the Dual Clutch Transmission to Veyron.

I.e. if BMW-M let them loose on the upcoming M version of X2, they might get handling well on par with X3/X4.

X2 M is supposed to get a 300+ bhp engine.

New X1 looks, rides and feels VERY different than the X3...since its built on a MINI frame. X2 just makes it worse!

Not knocking the MINI...but the two really don't mix.

I agree. I drove an X1 and X5 back to back earlier this year. Stepping into the X1 after driving the X5 felt like driving a hatchback: Seating position is too low, suspension is bouncy and cushy road feel non-existing.

Compared with the X3 and X5 the X1 doesn't feel like an SUV. However, its interior packing is excellent, the rear bench slides and the space under the boot floor is massive.

If you are family on a budget a base X1 sDrive18d is a decent car, but if you buy a decent engine and add options, the Q5, GLC and X3 are better.
