Shaking on Cold Start (2015 BMW X3 35i)

So I’ve had this car for maybe 3 weeks now, it’s my daily driver and all. Anyways, I noticed that when I start the car in the morning or after letting us sit for a couple hours you’ll feel and hear the engine shaking. Once it gets down below 800 rpm the shaking will stop (or maybe it’s still there and just not as crazy, honestly can’t tell). The check engine light comes off and on for a evap code (P0456), but I’ve noticed that it does it even when there’s no check engine light on? So it says that the gas cap is most common issue, I replaced it and still have the same issues.

Any Ideas?

(I’ll send footage if I capture it)

I have this engine shake/vibration on my 2017 x3, N20.
No codes/CEL so I have no where to start or what is causing it.

I did change spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel additive cleaners (LiquiMoly) and still experience the same.

I may try pumping different brand gasoline (PetroCanada Ultra94), currently running Shell Premium gasoline.

Oil change every 5,000 miles no exceptions.

Try to capture footage of this issue and post it online for us to review.

Sent it to the dealership I got it from, told me they got in contact with a BMW Service Center here in Oregon (if it’s important to you guys) and said it was the NVLD and Filter. It’s about $1,000 to fix but the dealership is covering the total so I don’t gotta work about it. They’ll have it done by Friday afternoon so I’ll keep you guys updated, thank you for all the information y’all gave me 💪🏼👍🏼

Oh, the joys of automotive mysteries! It sounds like your car is playing a game of "Guess What's Shaking?" in the morning. While I may not have all the answers, here are a few cheeky ideas to ponder: Perhaps your car is just an early riser, doing its own morning dance routine? Or maybe it's secretly auditioning for a percussion band, providing a unique engine symphony? In all seriousness, though, it's worth consulting a professional mechanic who can help diagnose and resolve the issue (saw your post above that you did that). Good luck finding the solution and may your daily drives be filled with smoother rhythms!

Got it back from BMW, The replaced the NVLD Module and a filter (which I don’t know what it for). The shaking is still there but not as vicious as before, you can barely feel the car shaking now.

Thank you guys for your help and insight, if it starts happening again or I find another problem, I’ll be sure to post again.

Cheers 🥂

AYYY GOOD to hear

ya I think this engine shake/vibration upon cold start or regular engine start is normal, my buddies M4 and M3 does the same, as well as my F25 x3 N20, could be a BMW engine thing lol (yes, the motor mounts are OK)

As long as you investigate these things and make sure nothing is broken, you are in the clear. Better safe than sorry.

It just feels like the car's engine is shivering.. (no CEL, no misfires, I run live data logging on a weekly basis)

I use a bluetooth dongle and an app called "BLUE DRIVER".
It's just a lot easier instead of having to plug in to the OBDII port.

Nothing fancy, here is the link: https://a.co/d/iuC8qkL
(BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBDII Scan Tool for iPhone & Android)

I got it mainly for my VW GTI with the Audi 2.0T engine and it's weird issues, it has similar issues as the 335i N55 motor, identical... If I had known this, I would've bought a 335i and my dad would've been proud lol

I use it to check CEL if ever present (please car god's, no CEL ever again).
AND live data readings, nothing fancy.

IF you plan to buy this, check out youtube video reviews prior to purchasing.
It is good to have and there's different ones out there so research, research, RESEARCH!

I'd be pissed spending money on that if it didn't resolve the issue, but like others have said it's kind of normal. Unless it's just really bad. I feel like every car I've had does that when cold to some extent.

Most times cold start shake is directly related to dirty Vanos solenoids from overused engine oil and not changing the oil early and often... You should try cleaning the solenoids.

engine vibration/shake during cold start while the RPM is above 900rpm is fine, it's when the RPM settles down to 900/800RPM and the engine shivers/shakes that has me worried but it goes away gradually within seconds.

You are right, the Honda/Toyota/VW(Audi) I owned have done this cold start shake/vibration.

It's normal AS LONG as it doesn't register a misfire, or CEL.

I'm very sensitive to sound/movement so I pick it all up even if no one else does.

anyways, let's keep our BMW engines running stronger than ever
